Finally, the OPI has come back to college football!
One year ago, the Boise State-Oklahoma game had me thinking that college football had reached its peak. I was also disillusioned with the play of Ole Miss. Plus, The Product was trying to date 3 different women at once to solidify his position in the Male Whore Hall of Fame (great induction speech, by the way). Even the hiring of lightning rod Nick Saban at Bama or the Mississippi State turnaround couldnt get me back to the computer.
Ive acquired the services of a former Bama quarterback/tailback/fullback/linebacker in Jimmy Johns as my general manager. Ive also added former Ole Miss Coach Ed Orgeron to the staff and shamed The Product into coming back on board.

If youre a football fan of any sort, youre well aware of the transformations a college uniform goes through over the years. An extra stripe here, a swoosh there, color change this, different hue that.
Of the uniform, helmet alterations always intrigue me most, as their design, color, and logo seem to define each university.
Now, Im biased in thinking Ole Miss has the best college uniform, yes. But our uniforms - most specifically, our helmet, has changed many times over the years. So many times, I wasnt quite sure of every iteration itd been through over the years. So I decided to task myself with a project. Dig around and attempt to uncover each football helmet design weve used over the years. Find them, and share them here on the site.
And, so, thats what we did.
And so, like the old saying goes, you dont quite know where youre going unless you know where youve been, lets take a quick peek at each helmet.

This afternoon, iStock launched a new backend for our search engine. The new engine is several orders of magnitude faster more This afternoon, iStock launched a new backend for our search engine. The new engine is several orders of magnitude faster than the old one. Does that mean you'll see super fast searches? Yes and no. Searches will be much faster, but most of the time it takes to return results will still be waiting for the data to flow to you, and waiting for your browser to render the page.
This means that we'll easily handle thousands more concurrent users—so your search won't get bogged down. Searches will stay fast, even at the busiest times of day.
Heavy site optimizations have been happening for the past few months, and will continue— but you probably won't notice most of them (but things should continue getting faster). There will be many small design and layout tweaks that both help our backend deliver the data, AND enable your browser render it more efficiently. There will also be some workflow updates that will allow you to get your job done faster. Enjoy.

Over the last couple of weeks, the site has been performing well overall, but Search has not. We have more Over the last couple of weeks, the site has been performing well overall, but Search has not.
We have 48 search servers, and right now they are all maxed-out with queries. We're adding 20 more servers this afternoon, and although this will help, it will not bring the level of service our customers have come to expect.
We've been tweaking the system constantly since the issues started a few weeks ago, and have had some success. But more importantly, we've planned some more thorough back-end architecture changes which will be implemented over the next few weeks. We believe these larger changes will help rectify the issues. We understand that the current situation is certainly not optimal, but we're doing what we can as quickly as we can to make iStock a first-rate experience.
In the mean time, you may have been seeing a new error message, and we'd like to explain it.
Your search failed because our servers were too busy to fulfill your request. This sometimes happens with searches that are very broad or complex and return massive numbers of results. Try narrowing your search to something more specific, or using less 'or' modifiers. If the problem persists, please contact Support.
Normally queries take less than a second to complete on our search servers. If a query takes over 30 seconds, we know something is wrong, and we are set up to kill that query in order to maintain overall site performance. So you'll see that message above if your query times out. Please note that we've always killed these queries, but in the past we would just return zero results. That wasn't optimal either, but now that we're dealing with so many search time-outs, we're providing the more detailed message in order to clarify what's happening.
We are working as hard as we can to get everything running as quickly as possible: it's our top priority. Thank you for your patience during this period. We'll do our best to keep you updated.

We are a country of list makers. We eat them up, whatever they are. Top 10 movies, rock songs, hair taboos, hockey goals, Olympic moments or things to do on a Saturday afternoon. It seems like we just can't get enough of them. We make lists to organize our lives, goals, thoughts, concerns, and groceries. Even as I am making a point about this, I realize I am making lists to prove my point.
Lists make sense out of chaos. We figure- you know, this seems random, but I bet we could make a list and make sense out of it. Why did the Roman Empire fall? There's a list. Why did Rockerfeller make millions? There's a list (and he wrote it). Why did Carrie Bradshaw cheat on Aidan? There are many many many lists, although it still makes no sense.
Lists are how we lay out our arguments and explain our tastes and preferences. They are how we decide our priorities and outline our goals. List makers make history. So, I thought it would be fun to name the top ten lists of all time. Feel free to disagree!
10. VHI's Top 100 Countdown!
VHI's Top 100 capture the very spirit of list making and our obsession of cataloguing our pop culture. Why do we do it? Is Satisfaction really a better song than Stairway to Heaven? (yes, in my personal opinion) Or are the Beatles or Rolling Stone's or Nirvana or U2 the greatest bands ever?? The beauty of these lists is that they don't matter at all and they give us something entertaining to talk about. It is fun to consider the merits of "Like a Rolling Stone" vs. "Teen Spirit", and no decision about it is going to hurt anyone. Unless they're high...
9. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
In our pervasively self-help culture, no secular book has better or more concisely listed what we are supposed to do to succeed and be happy, according to Stephen R. Covey. I am not a fan of the self help genre, however, the lingo of self awareness and life examination has bled into every single element of our lives. Our movies, TV and pop lingo are awash in it. Our churches have pulled elements of it and teach it over the pulpit. Our presidents talk about it. President Clinton spoke about how Seven Habits was one of the best books he had ever read, and it helped guide his campaign. Don't know what to tell you about how it affected ALL his decisions, but when a book gets that kind of attention, you know it is changing the world, for good or bad.
8. Dave Letterman's Top Ten
They have been the topic of conversation for 25 years. Sometimes it is brilliant, and sometimes it is a downright groaner. In the end though, it doesn't matter. The Top Ten encapsulates the idea of listing the absurd and the funny to show that there is truly something to laugh about on nearly every day. Whether it is politics, absurd news, or pop culture nonsense, Letterman has given us 10 different reasons to laugh at it.
7. The 12 Steps of AA
and all its sister programs. The idea of curing a disease, not through chemical or surgical correction, but by submitting yourself to a series of steps achieved through sheer will and submission to a higher authority has changed how we think about all kinds of recovery. It has opened the doors to how mental and physical illnesses are connected. And I think the 12 step programs can be credited with opening western medicine and psychology to more eastern philosophical thinking and religious devotion as a normal and healthy choice. Besides, how many references and jokes are there about 12 step programs? And everyone gets them, don't they?
6. The New York Times Best Seller list
OK- book lovers everywhere may not back me on this. After all, there are lists of books that win awards, and lists of great books. However, The New York Times Best Seller list tells us what we are reading. And that tells us a lot about what we are thinking and thinking about (or not as the case may be.) A book can be the best book in the world, but if no one reads it...
This list always seems to me to strike a good balance. After all, it separates the lists by genres and it tells how long the book has been there. Any book on the NYT Bestseller list for several weeks or months (or even years in some rare cases) is being read by America in general. It is being read in living rooms, parks, doctor's offices, the DMV and becoming fixtures on bedside tables. And that means this list catalogues what we want to read and think and talk about, whether it is by John Grisham, Bill O'Reilly, or (gulp) Danielle Steele.
5. The Declaration of Independence
Never has a list been more daring than the Declaration of Independence. It is the most eloquent and polite "By the way your majesty, you suck and so does your parliament, and this is why" that has ever been penned. The difference between a revolution and a rebellion is often a matter of opinion. But what looked like a mere rebellion was given a real voice because the Continental Congress drafted a list of whys. It was given consideration, debate and weighty deliberation. It was no longer a matter of whims or passions. And once the members of the Continental Congress signed it, they committed themselves and their countrymen irrefutably and irreversibly to a cause. This list left no retreat. And besides listing our grievances it listed the values that define The United States even today- Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
4. The Seven Wonders of the World
This list gets updated as the world gets more wondrous (and as the wonders disappear.) Of the ancient 7 Wonders, only 1 still exists; The Great Pyramids. Alas, the hanging gardens of Babylon and Temple of Artemis are gone. Now the list includes The Chunnel and the Golden Gate Bridge; a modern list of wonders for modern wanderers. And that is what is so wonderful about this list. It encapsulates all the wonder and marvelous things that are out there in the world to go and see and experience. Whether it is seeing unbelievably tall buildings, amazing bridges or conquered terrain beneath the sea, it is a list about our ingenuity, our hope, and our sense of adventure. It also shows us that list making is not a new thing at all. The ancients did it too.
3. Martin Luther's 95 Theses
Few lists have changed the world more than the list by a monk who nailed his to the church's door- 95 reasons that we are off course and what we have to do to fix it. That is a pretty extensive list. And since it started the protestant reformation, changed the ideas of worship and having a relationship with divinity, affected the corridors of power, altered the governments of Northern Europe, and helped lead to the establishment of America as we know it, it pretty much changed the world and set it spinning faster.
2. U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights
OF all the lists, this one is the most cherished and abused by its own people. The precious first 10 Amendments to our Constitution were an apex of the listing of the rights of citizens and the reward and idea that have kept us as one nation. E pluribus Unum is possible because we know we can't just tread all over each other and when these rights are respected and used with wisdom, they lead us closer and closer to our ideal. This isn't the first document to list the rights of citizens, but it is one that was meant to be applied to all citizens and not just the wealthy. Although it has taken further amendments (oh like the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 19th for example) to apply these rights across the board to all peoples in this nation, the ideals of protecting the citizenry from itself and the abuse of the majority has helped us avoid many injustices. That is why every story of a breach of these rights seems like an injustice in itself.
1. The Ten Commandments
Judeo-christian or not, the Ten commandments has had an effect on your life. It is the ultimate do and don'ts list and has been an influence on Western culture and laws since they were given, and hence on most of the world. The fascinating part is that it wasn't the original. According to the story, Moses destroyed the original tablets that held the laws of God because the Israelites were too wicked to keep them. The ten we have in Exodus are the "dumbed down version". And if you believe in the Judeo-christian God, then it goes to show that he has always understood just how much we need and like lists.
So, any to add or detract?.

What's funny is this isn't the first time I've thought her attorney needed a bit of a reality check.... her "visitation" schedule, at first, had me in tears, but now I'm coming to realize that she just isn't in touch with reality. Either that, or my attorney isn't. But I'm paying big bucks to hire what is arguably the top divorce law firm in Boston, so I doubt that my attorney is out of touch with reality. Oh yeah.... the fact that I hired who I did has been the butt of more than one snide remarks by Patricia, too.
So I have put together a first draft of what I would propose for a "co-parenting" schedule. I meet with my attorney tomorrow to discuss in more depth the prospect of pursuing full custody of Logan, as well as to review the final version of my financial statements and so forth. He also asked me to put together what I would like for visitation. At present, this is what I came up with:
Proposed parenting plan:
1. Logan should reside with UR in Lexington.
a. In football season (starting August 4), UR should take Logan to football practice and games during whatever times are determined by the coach and/or the League.
i. In August, this will most likely be Monday thru Thursday for two hours each evening.
ii. Starting in September, this will most likely be two evenings per week plus a game on either Saturday or Sunday.
b. Patricia should visit with Logan every Sunday starting at 11:00am (after church, to which UR has customarily taken the children).
c. Patricia should have Logan every other Saturday from 8:30am through the following Sunday evening at 7:30pm – except from roughly 8:30am to 11:00am on Sunday, during which time UR will take all 3 children to church in Hopkinton.
d. Patricia should also have Logan twice per week during the week during the same times that UR visits with the girls.
2. The girls should reside with their mother in Ashland
a. UR will visit with the girls every Sunday from 8:30am to 7:30pm. This should allow for UR to take all 3 kids to church.
b. UR should also have the girls every other Saturday from 8:30am through the following Sunday evening at 7:30pm.
c. During the week, UR should visit with the girls two times. I would tentatively propose Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00 to 8:00pm. In the event that Friday is agreed upon instead, that Friday should be converted to an overnight stay with the visiting parent if the visiting parent would be scheduled for visitation on the next day (Saturday).
3. The alternating Saturday schedule should be structured such that the 3 siblings are together every Saturday. That is, during the Saturdays that the girls come to visit UR, which would be the Saturday that Logan stays with UR and Patricia has the Saturday to herself. Similarly, on those Saturdays on which Logan visits with Patricia, that should be the Saturday the girls are with Patricia and UR has day to himself.
a. This should allow UR and Patricia to each have alternating Saturdays to themselves and also allow the 3 children to maintain their sibling relationship.
4. Christmas and Thanksgiving should be alternated, with the three children spending the holiday together with one parent (or, if both parents agree, they may spend it together as a family). That is, one parent would host the children for Thanksgiving 2008, then the other parent would host the children for Thanksgiving 2009. And whichever parent did not host Thanksgiving, will be permitted to host the children for the Christmas of that year.
5. All 3 children should spend Mother’s Day with their mother, regardless of any other scheduling arrangement (except UR will continue to take them to church from 8:30am to 11:00am).
6. All 3 children should spend Father’s Day with their father regardless of any other scheduling arrangement.
7. Birthday visitation shall be determined according to the foregoing schedule, with the exception that any birthday party held for any of the children may be attended by both parents – and only by both parents and specifically excluding any romantic partner of either parent, unless such partner is married to the parent.
8. Visitation during any holidays other than Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or a child’s birthday, shall be determined according to the normal visitation schedule, unless Patricia and UR agree to a different arrangement with respect to such holidays.

My son attended Offense-Defense (O-D) Football Camp in Atlanta this week. It is one of the few camps that allow full contact football. Lets just say I was less than impressed. There were far too many kids, and far too few coaches.
The camp lived up to the promise of full contact football but fell short of the promise of teaching fundamentals. They started to teach fundamentals on the first day, but it was quickly apparent that the coaches would pick one or two favorites to spend time correcting. I would be surprised if the coaches knew my sons name even with it written in large letters across his helmet. Although they showed the group of kids the techniques, I dont remember them correcting my son once as he did them.
As the week wore on, the drills disappeared after the second day and it became more of a scrimmage in preparation for the final day game. There is value in experience playing, but they were running plays without correcting the blocking techniques, etc. The coaches only seemed excited by the tackles and the hitting. There was a clear preference for some kids over others. My son was assigned to the 2nd team defense which apparently means he only gets to participate in about 20% of the plays even though every kid pays the same amount to attend camp. By the third day I felt I was paying for my son to drink Gatorade and watch the 1st team practice all day.
This scrimmaging was supposed to culminate in the O-D Bowl on the final morning where you are supposed to see all the progress your son has made all week. He was put on the offensive line for 3 plays in the first half even though he had been taught defensive line and running back all week. With 4 minutes to go in the second half, he hadnt played another down. Finally, I decided to say something to the coaches insisting to know why he wasnt playing. After all, this is an instructional camp, not a competitive league. Finally he got in a few more plays at the end, but they put him at wide receiver which he has never played and ran running plays away from his side for the remainder of the game.
During the week, the national sales rep continually pitched the camp urging us to sign up for next year and save $200. He would throw out the same famous names over and over again as proof that attending the camp could lead to scholarships and maybe the NFL. I hate to burst his bubble, but anyone who got into a Div 1 program or the NFL was going to get there anyways. There is no way this camp could have improved the players that much in just 3 days. I think they prey upon the vanity of the parents who want to make their children into superstars. Its like the people who play the lottery actually count on winning to fund their retirement. There are some serial football campers who attend almost every camp they can with their parents all summer long.
My son didnt complain once about the 8 hours/day they practiced, but he does not want to go back. Some of it is because of the fights he saw off the practice field. He was particularly disturbed by one where older kids beat up on a younger kid. I guess thats what happens when you attend an inner city camp. Next year, we will probably go to a Sports International Camp like we did last year going to Matt Lights Patriots Camp. There wasnt full contact, but it was better organized and the kids got autographs from Patriots every day. Thats really what they want.

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle. Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog…
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch. Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end — might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! — I hope I'll be safe at home.
