3. Oregon
5th year senior Justin Roper looks to be the QB to take the helms of Dennis Dixon after throwing for 4 TD in last seasons Sun Bowl. 12 starters are back in all including 5 on the offensive side. If Roper can put up some consistent numbers that come somewhat close to what Dixon put up, the Ducks could be a big threat in the Pac 10. Jermiah Johnson is an underrated RB and could be one of the best backs in the conference. They have some capable pass-catchers but they need someone to step up as a clear No. 1. The O-Line should be a strong suit. The defense should be pretty good with a solid LB corps and one of the best secondaries in the nation.

4. Oregon St.
The Beavers return 10 starters but there's no reason to believe they cannot finish in the top 4 of the league. QB Lyle Moevao was 4-0 as a starter last season and should excel as a full-time starter this season. The Beavers have always relied on a premier RB but this year there are some unknowns, look for Ryan McCants to carry the load. The WR Department has amazing depth and the O-Line has some promising bigs'. The defense should be the bread and butter of the team. The D-Line returns some key contributors who put a lot of pressure on opposing QBs. Looks for some transfers to step up as well. The LB group could experience some growing pains trying to replace all 3 starters. The secondary is loaded as all 4 starters have combined for 98 starts among them.

5. California
Cal looked like a Rose Bowl and even a BCS Championship contender in the first half of 2007. But in the 2nd half they struggled mightily and QB Nate Longshore looked very inconsistent. Longshore is back and wants to continue the success he had back in 2006. The offense seems pretty stagnant as no starting position players return. The offensive line is inexperienced but has some depth to spare. The defense will be a little more experienced than the offense. The LB department is solid with all 3 starters back plus some quality back-ups. The D-Line was mediocre last season and needs to pick up the slack, but the secondary has plenty of talent, which includes safeties Bernard Hicks and Marcus Ezeff.

6. UCLA
The Bruins have some QB problems as of right now. Patrick Cowan suffered a season-ending ACL injury back in spring practice and now Ben Olsen broke his right foot earlier this month. SDSU transfer Kevin Craft is expected to get the nod for the season opener vs. Tennessee in two weeks. There is no clear set RB right now as both leading candidates are coming off knee injuries. Marcus Everett returns for a fifth season at WR, there should be a mix of experienced receivers and freshmen getting playing time. They have one of the best DT tandems in the nation in Brigham Harwell and Brian Price.

7. Missouri Tigers
Future NFL Prospects: Chase Daniel, SR, QB; Jeremy Maclin, SO, WR; William Moore, SR, S; Chase Coffman, SR, TE; Sean Weatherspoon, JR, LB.
Reasons to Love: Much like 2007, Missouri is going to light up the scoreboard again in 2008. Daniel should again be a Heisman finalist and benefits from having the explosive Maclin to throw to in the passing game. Underrated talents Weatherspoon, defensive end Stryker Sulak, defensive tackle Ziggy Hood and linebacker Justin Garrett are all players to watch out look for on the Tigers’ defense.
Reasons to Question: The offense is going to be explosive again, but can the defense match up against the best in the Big 12? The secondary has experience, but isn’t spectacular by any means and the pass rush could stand to be more consistent. MIZZOU was so close to a national title appearance last year but couldn’t hang with Oklahoma in December. Will the same happen this year with the Sooners expected to once again be the favorites in the Big 12?
Game to Watch: vs. Kansas in Kansas City, Nov. 29.
8. West Virginia Mountaineers
Future NFL Prospects: Pat White, SR, QB; Ryan Stancheck, SR, OT; Noel Devine, SO, RB; Reed Williams, SR, LB; Mortty Ivy, SR, LB.
Reasons to Love: The Mountaineers have one of the most exciting players in college football at quarterback (White), and will once again have an explosive offense. Losing Steve Slaton to the NFL hurts, but Devine has speed to burn and should fill the void Slaton left in West Virginia’s backfield. The defense is also a bit underrated and the entire team came together nicely under new head coach Bill Stewart to beat Oklahoma in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl when Rich Rodriguez left the program in the lurch to coach Michigan.
Reasons to Question: Same song and dance as every year – the schedule is favorable, but one slip up against a lesser foe will probably bury WVU’s title hopes. And if White can’t stay healthy, the offense just isn’t the same unit. Devine must also show that he can take on a full rushing load.
Game to Watch: at. Pittsburgh, Nov. 28. (Remember when the Panthers spoiled the Mountaineers’ national championship aspirations in the final game of 2007?)
9. Clemson Tigers
Future NFL Prospects: James Davis, SR, RB; C.J. Spiller, JR, RB; Aaron Kelly, SR, WR; Cullen Harper, SR, QB; Dorell Scott, SR, NG.
Reasons to Love: The Tigers are stacked with experienced talent and boast one of the best running back duos in college football with Davis and Spiller. The offensive line doesn’t have a ton of experience, but their development this summer has been excellent and if the unit can hold its own, the Tigers’ offense is going to be tough to stop in ’08. Clemson is deservedly the favorite to win the ACC this year with this being Tommy Bowden’s most talented team.
Reasons to Question: Bowden’s bunch always seems to find a way to underachieve so why expect anything less again in 2008? And even though their development has been solid, if the offensive line doesn’t gel then the entire offense might crumble.
Game to Watch: vs. Alabama in Atlanta, Aug. 30.

Coaches Hot Seat have been astonished to see the number of high school football players just entering their senior year that have verbally committed to play at certain schools.  High school football season has not even started, and there are already 100s of kids that have verbally committed, but to a college football coach that verbal commitment doesn’t really mean very much, because the player still has to be recruited for another 8 months.  Therefore, we propose that a series of “signing windows” be instituted, where a recruit can sign a binding letter of commitment to his chosen college.

Signing Windows
1.  The first “signing window” would open in the summer after a recruit completes his junior year of high school, with the “signing window” opening on approximately July 15 and lasting until high school football practice starts, approximately August first.  During this two-week period a recruit would be able to sign a binding letter of commitment to a school, if he has made a visit, not an official visit, but just a visit to the school he plans to sign with.  Having a “signing window” between July 15 and August 1 would allow recruits to go ahead and make a firm written commitment to where they want to go to school, which would end the recruiting process for a number of recruits, and would most certainly help out college coaches, by freeing them up from recruiting the now signed players during the fall football season.  Just imagine if at some of the current schools that now have 20 or so verbal commitments, if all of those 20 recruits went ahead and signed a letter of commitment, the amount of time that would be freed up for coaches to concentrate on the football season (and maybe even their families some), since they would know that “X” number and exactly which players would be coming to their school.  We believe that eventually the majority of recruits would sign a letter of commitment during this first “signing window” and that by going ahead and signing in the summer before their senior year, it would be better for the recruit, for the colleges, and for the coaches.

2.  The second “signing window” would open on the first Monday after the end of the college football regular season, and would be open for 5 business days or one work week.  This second “signing window” would allow all of the recruits that did not sign in the summer before the football season to sign a letter of commitment to their chosen school, as long as they have made a visit to the school.  By having a second signing window in the first week of December and with the first signing window in the summer, we believe that a majority of recruits would sign their letters of commitments before their December high school exams and the holiday period, which would free up college coaches to focus on either their upcoming post-season games or on the next season.  There is no reason that a recruit that has decided where he wants to attend college should have to wait until the first week of February to make that written declaration, and it is not fair to put recruits through the entire recruiting process for another 60 days (December and January), not to mention the amount of time and effort that is expended by coaches to hand-hold recruits through those additional two months.  We have heard horror stories about the number of calls that football recruits get from recruiting services and from nervous coaches (and opposing team coaches), that do nothing more than make life difficult for recruits.  Why would the NCAA and the conferences allow recruits to be subjected to all of this excess recruiting when a recruit already knows where he wants to go to school?  It just makes common sense to allow a recruit to go ahead and sign a letter of commitment during one of the two mentioned signing window periods, so that the recruiting process can be brought to an end.

3.  The third “signing window” would open around the same time as the current National Signing Day in the first week of February and would last for one week.  All of the players that are undecided about where they want to go to school could sign their letter of commitment at this time, which would mercifully bring the football recruiting season to an end.

OK, to summarize our “Signing Windows” proposal:

The first “signing window” would open on July 15 in the summer before a football recruit’s senior year in high school and closes on August 1.   During this “signing window” a recruit could sign a binding letter of commitment to the school he has chosen to attend, as long as he has made a visit to the school.

The second “signing window” opens the Monday after the college football regular season is completed and stays open for one week, 5 business days.  A recruit can sign a binding letter of commitment at this time to the school he has chosen to attend, as long as he has made a visit to the school.

The third “signing window” opens during the first week of February and stays open for one week for all recruits that did not sign during one of the first two “signing windows”

The biggest advantages to the “Signing Windows” approach:

By allowing recruits that are now making verbal commitments to schools to go ahead and sign a binding letter of commitment either before the football season or in the first week after the conclusion of the college football regular season, the decks could be cleared for all recruits that want to go ahead and make a firm decision.  There is a tremendous amount of time spent recruiting high school football players even after they have verbally committed to a school, both by coaches at the school he has committed to, and by opposing team’s coaches, and in our opinion that is a tremendous amount of wasted time and resources that could be spent better elsewhere.  It is time to bring the recruiting madness to and end and go ahead and allow recruits that have decided on where they want to go to college, to go ahead and sign a letter of commitment to the school they have chosen.

College football coaches already have their hands full with coaching their current team, and there is way too much time spent both during the regular season and during the months of December and January recruiting or holding onto players that have often already decided where they want to go to school.  If a recruit has decided where he wants to go to school, he should be able in the United States of America to sign a letter of commitment to that school.  What could possibly be wrong with that idea?  If a majority of recruits started signing letters of commitment either before the football season or in the first week of December, we could eliminate a lot of the madness that goes on with recruiting, and most of all these really stupid, and very insulting to the general public, press conferences that are being held by 18 year olds so that everyone can watch breathlessly to see where a particular kid is going to play football.  That is not what choosing a college is supposed to be about, by holding a press conference, and anything that can be done to bring some sanity to the entire recruiting process should be welcomed by everyone.

Most importantly, by allowing recruits to go ahead and sign before their senior year and their high school football season, a tremendous amount of pressure could be taken off these young men that are now being bombarded from all sides over what is really a very important decision, where they are going to attend college.  Just imagine that if a recruit could go ahead and sign a letter of commitment in the summer before his senior year, how much weight would be taken off the recruit’s shoulders and how much more he could focus on playing high school football.  The NCAA and the conferences should be trying to make this entire process a lot simpler for the young men that are trying to decide which school to attend, and by allowing someone to go ahead and sign a letter of commitment to end the craziness of recruiting for that player, can only be a good thing for the recruit and for college football in general.

Lastly, we believe that along with instituting these three “signing windows” for high school football recruits, another major change needs to be made that would allow both head football coaches and assistant coaches, to get to know high school players better before they ever sign a letter of commitment to a school.  It is very easy for a college football coach to recognize talent, but character is another thing entirely.  We believe that head coaches and their assistants need to be allowed to spend more time with both recruits and their high school coaches, so that college coaches can get a better understanding of what makes a recruit tick, and if that recruit would be a good addition to a particular school and football team.  We don’t quite understand the “Saban Rule” or the rule that caused the “Saban Rule” to be passed, but we do know that if college coaches are allowed to sit down with recruits, their parents, their guidance counselors, and their high school football coaches, we would be able to cut down on the number of negative problems that are now happening on college campuses.  We do not know the recruiting rules that pertain to visiting with recruits well enough to recommend a lot in this area, but it seems to us that after a recruit has completed his sophomore year of high school, coaches should be able to sit down with a recruit, and everyone else mentioned above so that a clear picture of the recruit can be obtained.  It is vitally important that college coaches know all they can about a recruit, his character, his skills on the football field, his performance in the classroom, his attitude, and many other things, and the only way to learn those things is by spending time on high school campuses and in the homes of recruits.  The coaches need time with these recruits, and the recruits need to spend time with the coaches so that can really get to know each other, so that when the first “signing window” opportunity arrives, a recruit can confidently sign with a school that he really wants to attend and play football for.  Who could possibly argue with any of that?

As for verbal commitments, we would probably just recommend that they be done away with, and that everyone would find out where a high school recruit was going to school, when he signed during the above mentioned “signing windows.”

Our goals are simple in making these proposals:

1.  What is best for the high school recruits?
2.  What is best for college football coaches and the game of college football?

By instituting a system where recruits that are ready to make a decision and can go ahead and sign a binding letter of commitment to a school just before their senior year of high school or just after the college football regular season, a lot of pressure would be taken off of recruits and their families, and it would allow coaches to both know who they have signed for the next year, and to focus on the current college football season.  If a majority of recruits signed during the pre-senior year or early December “signing window” we believe that it would benefit the recruits, it would free up more time for college coaches to coach their current teams and spend time with their families, and it would hopefully bring an end to the silliness of an 18 year old calling a press conference to tell the world where he is going to college.  If it only did the latter, the “signing window” change would be well worth it, but we believe the benefits of this proposal would be large for everyone involved, and that it would make the entire game of college football stronger.

I took another star turn as ball park villain at my 12-year-old's tournament game Sunday in Concord. Those times when I'm shouting encouragement, making what seem perfect coaching points, are becoming out-of-body experiences. And, when I'm talking to an umpire who's 100 percent wrong -- and I'm absolutely in the right -- there's really no stopping me.

Oh, I'm not proud of being the dad who makes noise. I sure don't like having a game official turn away from the game to say something to me in the bleachers. I'll bet you to the punch ... I'm a jackass! I'll try not to be a jackass at the next game, but on Sunday ...

We arrived at the championship semifinal with my son's team, the Admirals, leading 4-3. Their pitcher plunked a hitter to put the go-ahead run on first in the bottom of the third inning. As I was walking down to the dugout to check the score, I see the umpire walk out and start lecturing the pitcher. He's a great big kid who has trouble throwing strikes, but I've not thought a young pitcher was intentionally hitting batters since, well, I intentionally hit a McKinleyville High batter in the butt during a summer league game that ended in a brawl at old Albee Stadium.

My oldest son coaches the Admirals with more calm and repose than I ever show coaching. He gave the umpire a chance to talk to the pitcher before walking out to mention that, maybe, the umpire ought not coach his pitcher. And, really, there was no reason to delay the game with the temperature reaching 100 degrees on a day where smoke from Bay Area fires were reaching Concord.

"I just told him I know he's not trying to hit batters," the umpire said. "But, I'm in charge of keeping the players safe and, I told him if he hits another batter ... he's outta the game."

My son pointed out the small matter of their being no rule covering that type of action by an umpire.

"I know it's not in the rulebook, but it's my discretion to remove him from the game for safety reasons," the umpire said, as if he actually knew what he was talking about.

So, I went from happy to hot in a split-second. Nothing upsets me more than umpires who make up the rules and don't know how to do their jobs. To hammer home my suspicion that the ump was an over-officious goof who didn't know the rules or how to run a game, I got to hear the opposing coach greet the Admirals relief pitcher with, "Hey...he can't pitch! He pitched six innings yesterday!"

My son, more calmly than I would have, said, "He pitched yesterday when we beat YOUR TEAM and only played three innings!" The umpire said, "I know he's just trying to cause trouble. We're playing by the rules, so ... " The reliever stood idle, with his teammates, why the umpire went to talk to the other team's coach. But, hey, he knew the coach was just causing trouble.

The game fell apart for the Admirals at that point. Trailing 10-4, my son came on in relief and registered a strikeout on three pitches. The Admirals rallied to make it 10-6 heading to the bottom of the fourth.

My son was wild ... really wild ... wild like the worst kind of wild a tall, gawky, lefthand pitcher can be. He walked in a run around striking out the side. I channeled my mom for the entire inning, trying to "coach" him through. The only difference between my mom "coaching" me through a rough patch was that she cursed at me, cursed at the umpire and, somehow, didn't make people around her mad.

Midway through the difficult pitching performance, I noticed that my son's tailing fastball wasn't being called a strike. It's an unhittable pitch when it's right. It cross the inside corner against a righty hitter, then breaks in under the guy's hands. When he has a umpire who knows how to position himself to call a game, and who isn't afraid of getting hit with a foul tip, that pitch is a gem.

Sunday's home plate umpire started a couple feet behind the Admirals catcher. By the time my son was into his second inning of work, he was at least seven foot behind home plate ... with a catcher squatting in between him and heart of the strike zone. After the fourth fastball did what it does and I didn't hear, "Steeee-rike!" I said, "That is a strike!" After the fifth fastball and another walk, I said, "It crosses the plate a strike, then tails in ... c'mon!"

It was about then that I began the out-of-body experience.

Fastball ... strike ... nope! Ball 1. "Scoot up. You're seven feet behind homeplate." (Really, in my mind, it came out sound cool and calm.) Fastball ... snaps under the hitter's hands. Ball 2. "You can't possibly see that pitch where you're setting up."

(Note: I took umpire training from Eureka High counselor Ron Dias when I was a kid. Then, I took advanced umpiring training from a good umpire named Mike Bickler who lived in Eureka for awhile. I know positioning and I know the rules. Home plate umpires set up over the catcher's inside shoulder ... not seven feet behind the catcher, flinching because a kid throws hard.)

Now, it's worth noting that my youngest son doesn't like to hear me holler. So, I'm so outside my body that I'm beginning to upset him ... and bug the trailer park fans cheering for the Maniacs ... but, hey, I was right! When right's on my side ... I'm a jackass who's in the right!

Now the game proceeds with 10 minutes before the time limit expires. My son and his mates are rushing to get 3 outs. His catcher missed a pitch in the dirt. It might or might not have hit him. The home plate umpire who believes the rule book allows for him to exercise discretion in all areas at any time, took off his mask and asked if the boy was OK.

Now, really, I'm a horse's ass of the first degree ... I get that ... but, since the kid said, "I'm fine. Let's go," I sort of thought, maybe, the umpire should've put his mask back on and played on. The boy knew how hurt he was or wasn't. His coaches are charged with his safety, not the ump. And, hell, his mom and dad were there and would've protected him. But ... the umpire was one who only feels he has total control in one place on earth -- on a baseball field when he's working.

I heard the umpire say, "I don't care if the game ends while we're standing here. We're not playing until you take a break." The catcher was in his squat giving my son signs when I shouted, "Let's go."

The ump tired and shouted at me: "I'm in charge of the players' safety and I gotta kid down here crying and you wanna start the game up? Great! He's down here crying and ..."

I said, "He's in position and ready to play. I just said, 'Let's go.' "

A fan in a muscle shirt and weightlifter sunglasses said, "Now you're ruining MY experience at the game!" I thought, "Screw you Jarhead ... shuddup and sit down," but said, "Just ignore me then, I'm not talking to you."

The ump, maybe 2 minutes into the mess I guess I created, said, "I don't care if he wants to play ... he's crying and ..."

I could've stopped. Karen said, "Stop." My daughter was poised to leap over her and stick her hat in my mouth, but ... "You're an umpire, not a psychiatrist...just play the game. Ignore me..."

From that point on, I realized I'm in another world when it comes to baseball and exercising the rules and an umpire doing his job. If they know the rules and position themselves correctly, I never say a word. I umpired. I know we all make a bad call now and then, but we should never create "an umpire's discretion" or opt to shrink the strike zone on a big, hard-throwing pitcher because we're afraid of getting hit by a fastball.

If I'm crazy...please, tell me so.

I won't care, but, please ... tell me so.

It occurred to me that people hear me at one game and assume I was equally as loud at the other 30 I've attended. Then, they remember all the talk about abusive sports dads and figure I beat and berate my son at home. They're wrong. My youngest son tells me, "You hollered way too much." I say, "I'm sorry. You know I'm just nervous and I know I'm wrong. I'm getting better, I hope." I never say a negative word about his baseball performance at home. None. Zero. But, to hear me Sunday, it would've been easy to assume my kid was getting his ass-kicked in the parking lot ... you know?

No, really, I don't beat my son!

However, if I'd had the presence of mind to remember my oldest son (who trained for a couple years in mixed martial arts) was in the park, I might have walked down and asked that guy in the muscle shirt if he wanted to do something to help enhance his ball park experience. I figure...I throw a punch...he decks me...my son's in the mix and ...

No, really, I only portray a jackass at the ball park once in awhile.

With the sun blazing outside and sweat dripping down your back when youre simply sitting it’s easy to end up lounging around lethargically on your summer vacation. But if you plan on playing sports in college, you can’t let your muscles turn to mush over the summer.
Here’s some summer activities to help ensure you’re up to speed when school starts.
Swimming: Not only do you stay cool under the summer sun, swimming is a total body work out. It’s good for your cardiovascular system (your heart) as well as works your upper body and leg muscles. So what are you waiting for, jump in!
Beach Volleyball: Duh. You can get a suntan, check out hot bodies in bathing suits, tone and show off your own, all in one. Beach volleyball requires upper arms strength and you also work out your leg muscles because of the resistance of the sand. It also improves your hand-eye coordination and your reflexes. Great if you are planning on being a cheerleader, dancer, or gymnast.
Inline Skating: Wanna run circles around the competition? Well if you are planning on joining the track team, inline skating is how you should roll. It burns as many calories as running and keeps your heart and lungs in shape too.
Bike Riding: Not only do you get to work out your legs, it’s a great way to get from point A to point B. You can go meet your friends at the park, pool, movie theatre, get exercise and be good to the environment at the same time.
So, there’s no need bum around, just because it’s the summer and you don’t have mandatory phys ed class. Get out there, have fun and stay in shape and you’ll be a few steps ahead of the game when school starts in fall.

EMBARGO UNTIL SATURDAY 7-12-8
NOT FOR RELEASE
—Waco—Baylor University officials announced today that the Baylor football program has been officially recognized as a charitable organization by The State of Texas.
The news comes on the heals of the announcement that Baylor received $6.69 million in 2006-2007 from the Big 12 for basically just showing up and panhandling on the corner of competitive and relevant.
“This is a huge day for us as it legitimizes for many the charitable donations they’ve made to this program over the years,” spokesperson Yogi Bruin said on a conference call Thursday. “Schools like Texas and Oklahoma can now officially write-off much of the money they contribute to the Big 12 that ends up in Waco. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
For Baylor head coach Art Briles, the designation as an official charity is already paying dividends.
“As soon as we found out, we had players out all over town raising money, setting up little donation stands and ringing bells,” said Briles. “Heck, we made $47.34 over at the Wal-Mart and raised another $29.62 down at the Mall. If this keeps up, we’ll be BCS bound in no time.”
As news of Baylor football becoming an official State Charity filtered through the Big 12 other schools weighed in.
“This is great, we’ve got some old helmets and stuff that we were gonna give to Goodwill, but were sending it to Waco now,” said Texas head coach Mack Brown. “They’re hardly used anyhow since we only broke them out for the AM game last year.”
Nebraska athletic director Dr. Tom Osborne agreed that it’s a good thing for the conference.
“We’ve got more money than we know what to do with it, obviously if you’ve seen us play lately,” said Osborne. “It’d be great to know that were able to send it to Baylor now and now have to fund something like another women’s sport or something. We’re looking at sending a big check down there today. We’re not stopping there though. With Baylor now a charity, we can involve them in our Husker Mentoring Program. We’ll be sending players down there to teach ‘em how to drink right, find the parties with the most “promising girls” if you know what I mean and I think you do, as well as tech them to find the right lawyers for the right legal issues. For too long, Baylor players have not had the right mentoring and we’re here to help now.”
Baylor spokesperson Yogi Bruin said on the conference call the Baylor officials are already looking at ways to maximize their returns via their new status.
“Games will take on more of a Telethon atmosphere this year, with a big phone bank set up in one end zone where fans can call in during the game and make donations,” said Bruin. “We’ll have Jerry Lewis out for the first game to do an honorary coin toss as well.”
Baylor officials are planning a silent auction for their second home game this year as well with Big 12 coaches lining up to donate items.
“Texas Tech’s Mike Leach has already sent in a collection of plastic pirate swords he bought at several Stuckey’s locations around the Southwest and Gene Chizik is sending down his Big Game Coaching Credentials since he won’t be using those any time soon,” said Bruin.
Baylor’s move to a charitable organization is expected to put them back on par with T.C.U. and Houston within 2-3 years.

Ryan Baker is the best linebacker recruit LSU has had since Darry Beckwith. He is one of the headliners of this class, and I say that without hesitation. He is going to be a very good player for this team, and probably a multi-year starter. I would be surprised if he is not on special teams as a true freshman and competing to take over the position vacated by Beckwith next season.

Special to SportsDay
For the second year in a row, Florida Softball Head Coach Tim Walton and assistants Jennifer Rocha and Jenny Gladding have been named the Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Walton, who was also named the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year, oversees all functions of the program and works primarily with the Gator outfielders and hitters. He guided the Gator hitters to set school records in nearly every offensive category including batting average, slugging percentage, hits, runs scored and RBI. Under Walton's tutelage in the outfield, sophomore Francesca Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.) successfully transitioned from catcher to outfielder and junior Kim Waleszonia (Fontana, Calif.) moved from second base to outfield, with both earning All-America honors.
Rocha is Florida's pitching coach. She helped the Gator pitching staff to break nearly every Florida team and individual pitching record this season. Rocha worked with junior two-time All-American Stacey Nelson
(Los Alamitos, Calif.) who set many individual single season records, including ERA and strikeouts, and freshman Stephanie Brombacher (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) who finished the season with a 20-0 record, the first undefeated record in school history.
Gladding works primarily with the Gator infielders. This season she coached an infield that started two freshman in the middle infield, a first-year starting sophomore at third and a junior at first. With Gladding's guidance, junior first baseman Ali Gardiner (Waccabuc, N.Y.) and freshman Aja Paculba (Wildomar, Calif.) earned All-America honors.
Florida finished the season with an NCAA-record 70 victories and advanced to the program's first Women's College World Series after capturing the first Southeastern Conference Tournament title. The Gators had five players named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region team with all five moving on to earn Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America honors.
Those same five players also earned Easton All-Americahonors. Nelson and Enea were named to the Women's College World Series All-Tournament team, while Gardiner led all players in the WCWS with seven hits and had the second-best batting average in the tournament.
Nelson was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year and was named to the All-SEC first-team along with Gardiner and Waleszonia. Paculba was named to the second team, while she, Brombacher, Megan Bush (Anaheim
Hills, Calif.) and Tiffany DeFelice (Coral Springs, Fla.) were named to the All-Freshman team. Nelson, Gardiner, Paculba and Waleszonia were also named to the All-Defensive team.
The Gators went 27-1 in SEC play to take the league title with the best record in league history.
In addition to their on the field accomplishments, eight Gators earned SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades, Enea, Gardiner, junior Brittany Handy (Gainesville, Fla.), junior Kristina Hilberth (Dunedin, Fla.), junior Brooke Johnson (Lakeland, Fla.), Nelson, senior Mary Ratliff (Mt. Sterling, Ky.),and Waleszonia. Nelson became Florida's first softball player to be both a first-team All-American and a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Ratliff was named to the SEC Good Works team and the entire Gator team volunteered many hours of community service through Children's Miracle Network, Shands and Shands at AGH, Habitat for Humanity and the Office of Student Life's Goodwill Gators program.
The NFCA awards coaching staff of the year honors in each of its eight regions. The regional winners are voted on by the coaches in that region. A national coaching staff of the year is then selected by the
NFCA. Arizona State was named the National Coaching Staff of the Year after taking the Women's College World Series title. A complete listing of the regional winners is below.

Over the past decade the major sites have jockeyed for position. Many of the independent recruiting services have joined more technologically advanced networks that take care of administrative and data-related tasks. The last 12 months have brought several new developments that will shape the coming years. Gone are the days of using (900) numbers and waiting for an annual newsletters or magazines.

Rivals.com has emerged from the pack with the best recruiting product, and this year the company found someone to market their services Yahoo! To keep the momentum, Rivals.com needs to invest in their core recruiting team that breaks stories across all regions. Otherwise Rivals.com will slip. Keep an eye on the partnership between Rivals and Student Sports.

Fox and ESPN have butted heads in broadcast television, and the battle has crossed into recruiting territory. In 2007 a subset of unhappy Scout.com publishers left the Scout Network (Fox) and affiliated with ESPN's website. This ebb and flow isnt new. Similar scenarios played out four years ago between Rivals and Scout, but they shook hands and agreed to reduce publisher poaching. But ESPN is new to this contest and is posturing for position.

Independent National sites from founding fathers like Tom Lemming and Max Emfinger are reinventing their niche. Lemming left ESPN and partnered with CSTV which is CBSSportslines extension for college sports. Emfinger left Scout.com and went independent with his National site. While Emfingers website is clunky, its already a Top 10 college recruiting destination and is worth investigating if you are in the Southeast.

Prepstar remains part of the National scene, though it relies on income through marketing and placing recruits. They handle their own research and uncover information other major sites might miss. Prepstar has kept name recognition, but its flying below the radar and wont challenge Rivals, Scout, or ESPN anytime soon.

Subscriber's Guide and Bottom Line: About a decade ago the popularity of recruiting and the internet sites peaked. One long-time HS fan in Florida explained, At least 30-35 legitimate National and Regional sites came on the scene around 2000, and theyve all morphed. The gurus are all the same, but they now flock to the best place to market their information.

If youre interested in Recruiting Coverage, investigate your NCAA team site on Rivals.com and Scout.com. This is where the majority of recruiting gurus have landed. Even though they are more expensive its still your best bang for the buck.

If you dont want to drop a C-Note on your recruiting habit then consider subscribing to ESPNs Insider Package or PrepStar for National coverage. Most sites offer a free limited-time offer so take advantage and see which site has the strongest features and community. If you dont need timely information at your fingertips or prefer print media then consider Tom Lemmings publication.

Subscribers Guide
Be cautious with sites that offer athlete marketing because their ratings and features can be biased.
Magazines are a nice touch, but they are antiquated and take time away from online publishing. In most cases the information has already been recycled.
Recruiting websites affiliated with legitimate Camps and Combines offer reliable combine values.
Dont rely on the experts. Seeing is believing, and several sites offer video on the majority of prospects.
If you have the recruiting itch then subscribe to multiple sites. It certainly wont make you less informed.
Strong message boards and forums can often be the best way to learn about recruits and your program.
Pick sites that concentrate on recruiting and arent saturated with other sports information that can be found in local media.
Take advantage of weekly trials if you want to get a feel for a website.

Earning an athletic scholarship is not an exact science. Therefore, there are common mistakes that are made by many prospective athletes. Avoid these pitfalls and you will increase your chances of earning an athletic scholarship to the school of your dreams.
1) Taking the recruiting process for granted
One of the most common pitfalls is taking the process for granted because you think that schools are going to aggressively recruit you. Many athletes receive letters from schools, but that doesnt mean that they are recruiting you. You need to follow up with these coaches and express a mutual interest. Only a select few athletes actually get personal visits from coaches. It is simply too expensive and time consuming for coaches in most sports. Dont take anything for granted and market yourself aggressively.
2) Underestimating your chances of getting an athletic scholarship
You dont need to be the best athlete on your team or in your league in order to earn an athletic scholarship. Of course, you need to be skilled at your sport, but not necessarily the star. Many athletes dont even attempt to get a scholarship, despite thousands of scholarships being at their fingertips. Talk to your coach to assess your chances and get some advice on how to proceed with the recruiting process. Register with beRecruited, and get your name out there to hundreds of prospective coaches in your sport.
3) Making poor decisions off the field
You can severely damage your chances of earning an athletic scholarship by getting trouble with the law and abusing drugs and alcohol. Although everybody makes mistakes when they are young, these decisions reflect your true character to a prospective school. If you dont exercise discipline and good decision-making off the field, you probably arent going to on the field. Drugs and alcohol also dramatically affect the bodys recovery time and double the chances of injury.
4) Letting your grades slip
As any coach will tell you, schools are looking for a complete package in their recruits. Of course they want excellent athletes, but they also desire recruits that perform in the classroom. Do not assume that your athletic prowess trumps your academics. Do your best in the classroom until you graduate.
5) Getting bad advice
You will find that everyone has advice for you during your recruiting process. Some of it will be good advice, but not all of it. Consider your sources carefully, and be sure to evaluate their expertise before following their advice.
6) Over/under reliance on your coach
Your coach is one of your biggest assets in the college recruiting process. Often times, coaches have connections that can help you in your search. Experienced coaches are also good judges of talent and may be able to give you an idea of your level of competition. Dont forget to use them as a resource. However, dont assume that they know everything, or that they will do anything for you. You need to ask for their help, and you will need to follow up with them. Remember that they have a lot going on in their lives besides you. Few coaches will aggressively market you to colleges. Consider your coach as being a crucial part of your recruiting process, but not your only resource.

College Football Previews Are Coming

Seeing the San Diego State preview on Collegefootballnews.com has me thinking about the possibilities of the upcoming fall season. The CFN analysis is fair and has only a couple minor details wrong that a national media organization would be unlikely to be aware of, anyway.

Their view of SDSU is pretty much in line with my own thinking. Once coach Chuck Long gets his recruits some experience, they have a chance to be pretty good. The only question is how long it will take for them to jell. Most of the predictions put the Aztecs at last, or close to last, in the Mountain West Conference, mainly because the writers know that most of a porous defense returns and they have no idea who the new players on offense are. That's okay. If the defensive line progresses as expected, the stoppers might end up being pretty decent this year. The offense, with new starters across the line, at quarterback and at two receiving spots, is a project. Hopefully, the preview writers will know the names of the offensive players by this time next year.

What worries a lot of fans of the Aztecs is that the offense showed next to nothing this spring. The defense dominated, no question. Me, I'm not so concerned about spring performance. For the offense, anyway, it was all about learning. For the players to discover what it was like to actually participate in a meaningful way. For the coaches to determine which guys were on track for a productive 2008 season.

My worry is about the usual Aztec issue: the hole. Football teams on Montezuma Mesa are usually filled with talent, but there's always an empty space somewhere to let them down. This year, there are two holes likely to slow whatever progress Long and Company have made.

-- Kicker. Steady Garrett Palmer is gone, to be replaced by sophomore transfer Bryan Shields, a hometown boy from Bonita. CFN describes him as having a big leg. What worries me is that a young offensive line is likely to struggle most in the red zone, which will leave Shields a lot of opportunities. Fans could trust Palmer inside the 40. Shields? Don't know. I need accuracy, not a boomer.

-- Cornerback. I have yet to be impressed by Aaron Moore and, while Vonnie Holmes seems to have a nose for the football, it's only on an occasional basis. No question they were hampered by a lack of a pass rush last year, but even if there's no pressure on the opposing QB this year, I'm not so sure those two can hold up their end of the bargain. Behind them are former Oceanside HS standout Jose Perez, who was a tremendous prep athlete only a half-notch below the Reggie Bush-Patrick Gates level, but is completely untested at the college level. Sophomores Romeo Horn and DeyJuan Hemmings are also in the mix, but I've never heard of either being more than warm bodies unless they suddenly develop.

Interestingly, the defense is also where you'll find the strength of the team. The safety combination of senior Corey Boudreaux and sophomore Martrell Fantroy -- who could be an All-MWC player this season -- is as good as there is in the conference. There's very good depth behind them.

You also have quality linebacker Russell Allen and some guys who looked like they had some potential in their first seasons: Luke Laologi, Andrew Preston and Jerry Milling. Passing them all up could be redshirt freshman Miles Burris, who appeared lost at times this spring, but when he was on, he was a beast. Burris is likely getting significant snaps by October, if not sooner.

The one other worry I have is at running back, where there is no star nor anyone who looks to have star potential. I never quite got the hoopla over Brandon Sullivan, who seems to me to make nice depth and is decent at catching the ball out of the backfield. There's too small Atiyyah Henderson again and the back who had a good spring, Devon Brown, who is also small.

Long really has to make a recruiting push at the position and bring in Cathedral Catholic's Tyler Gaffney or, since he's one of only a few top prep senior ball-carriers out west, find a JC nugget. I hope Sullivan or Brown (or both) prove me wrong.

The schedule is favorable in some respects. The non-conference games in September go Cal Poly, at Notre Dame, at San Jose State and Idaho. No one really expects to beat the Fighting Irish in South Bend, but catching them in their opener might give the Aztecs a chance to be competitive. Figuring the other two are all but sure victories, the San Jose State game could be the key to reaching six wins this year. The Spartans aren't very good, but they've been tough at home in recent years and beat the Aztecs up there two years ago. It's a sad state of affairs when you can look at a schedule and not list SJSU as a sure win, but nowadays it's a hump SDSU has to climb over.

If things are going well heading into MWC play, then home games vs Air Force, Colorado State and UNLV should be winnable. Any stumbles, or if there are hopes of reaching seven wins, they'll have to snag wins either at New Mexico, at Wyoming, or at home vs a very good Utah team.

I think 7 wins are possible, 6 wins are realistic, and 5 wins are likely. A five-win season would continue a win-total improvement of a game each season under Long. Six wins would probably not have been enough for a bowl last year but could be in 2008 because there are a couple more post-season games. A lot of things will have to go right, including health and the development of the offensive line, for the Aztecs to finish 7-5.

That said, no matter what you read, Long is not on the hot seat this season. Unless this fall brings a complete disaster, including another loss to Cal Poly, then Long will stick around to see what 2009 brings. This upcoming season is the year his recruits get their feet wet. The next season will be the one in which Long and his staff are judged.
