While those two Queens representatives are in the top five in raising money overall as well as during the last six months, Congressmember Anthony Weiner, who is likely gearing up for a mayoral run, tops the Queens list with more than $5 million overall and roughly $1.4 million between the January and July filings.

In addition, City Councilmember John Liu took in nearly $825,000 from more than 1,000 donors during the past six months and has raised more than $3 million overall for a yet-to-be-determined citywide run in 2009. However, he termed his fundraising efforts thus far only a warm-up of what is likely to come during the next year.

Once this years elections are finished and people start to focus on the 2009 elections, I will make an announcement and then the fundraising will really begin, Liu said.

However, some candidates mentioned the struggling economy as well as the immediacy of the 2008 presidential and statewide elections as deterrents to raising money now.

I think the presidential campaigns had a lot to do with it, said Assemblymember Audrey Pheffer, who is running for Queens Borough President. Some people had said, I cant now - call me in six months.

Pheffer, who raised roughly $110,000 during the last six months and $338,000 overall, said that since she returned to Queens after this years legislative session, her fundraising has picked up, but adjusting to the different city CFB rules that apply to the campaign has been challenging.

The last time I campaigned for a new office was eight years ago, Pheffer said. s a completely different ballgame.

Frank Gulluscio, District Manager for Community Board 6, has declared his candidacy for the 32nd City Council District - a seat currently held by Councilmember Joseph Addabbo. Gulluscio reported raising roughly $28,000 during the last filing period, which was nearly seven times the amount he raised during the previous filing.

s important for me at least to raise funds early, because if Addabbo wins his Senate race, there will be an election for his seat almost immediately, Gulluscio said. You have to be prepared.

Others like Dale Nussbaum, who currently works at Queens Colleges Office of Institutional Advancement, reported to the CFB for the first time in July, and she had raised more than $60,000. However, Nussbaum said she is still just exploring the possibility of running and does not have a date where she would make a decision one way or another.

Although 19 of the 45 Queens people who filed in July reported raising more than $20,000 during the last six months, five candidates who had filed previously with the CFB reported raising no additional money during the most recent period.

With more than a year before 2009 primaries, some candidates may decide not to run, while other candidates who have not signed up with the CFB are likely to do so before the next filing deadline in January.

I dont know if this year or this election cycle has distinguished itself, said Liu, who referenced the 2001 city elections, as a comparison for the last time this many open seats were up for grabs.

Canberra - The Olympic City

Olympic fever has certainly gripped the world, with conversations about sprints and marathons and weightlifters and Greco-Roman wrestling dominating the water cooler for the past few weeks. Beijing certainly has a range of impressive venues like the Bird's Nest and the Giant Mattress of Water. Nice work, Chinese peeps.

And Canberra, a leader in world sophistication and the envy of cities everywhere, sits back and watches.

In an attempt to bring the world "the greatest Olympic Games ever," Canberra is preparing a bid for the 2016 Games. And why not? We already have most of the facilities already set up - we're just waiting for the athletes to turn up.

With a capacity of around 35,000 (around 40-45,000 if you let the kids sit on the grass around the sidelines), Canberra Stadium (formerly Bruce Stadium) will be home of the Opening Ceremony, which will be all kinds of awesome. This intimate setting will allow drunken members of the crowd to yell abuse at the marching athletes, and also give the athletes able chance to physically assault them back without trouble. The Canberra Raiderettes will provide the entertainment with their intricate dancing and synchronised moves that tell the story of the "Macarena" and whatever shit Pink has released that year. The Olympic Flame* will be lit by 13-year old kids from the Belconnen Bus Interchange flicking cigarettes into a plastic wheelie bin.
*lighting of the flame may not happen due to extreme fire danger.

Canberra Stadium (formerly Bruce Stadium), home of the mighty, giant-killing Canberra Raiders and the over-paid, low-achieving ACT Brumbies will also be the centre of attention for the athletics leg of the Games. Spectators are warned to bring cash to the Stadium though, as there is only one ATM in the whole place. In terms of the track and field competition, I'm fairly sure there's enough space on the field for everything to be going on at the same time. If not, they can learn to share.

Anyone who's ever visited, lived in or flown over the city of Canberra will realise that each and every road has a bike-path that is predominantly bike-free, so the cycling street races have never been more awesome or scenic, as athletes will be treated to a city without the dangers of pollution or terrorist attacks, and be able to cycle up and around Telstra Tower, past Questacon and the National Library, through the "Orange Tunnel" and into the heart of the mess that they've made on Caswell Drive, before finishing on the marbled steps of Parliament House. Fucking sweet. I'd probably buy a bike if it meant I could take part. Cycling athletes are not permitted to take advantage of the buses that have the bike racks on the front of them. I'm still trying to work that shit out myself.

The cycling pursuit events can be held in the storm-water drains in various suburbs. I know there's a Velodrome already built in Fadden or something, but I'm buggered if I'm going there to watch it. I'll get stuck on Bugden Ave and won't be seen again.

Soccer - nup. Get rid of it.

Softball - already gotten rid of.

European handball - to be played at EPIC - preferably before they have Oktoberfest there, because otherwise the floors will be sticky with spilt "German" beer, vomit and possibly some blood. I love celebrating being so damn German. I would also like to introduce "schoolyard handball" into the Olympics, and have it played at any school ground in Canberra. Each match must be agreed as to whether there are "intoes" allowed, "spooks", "rolls-to-the-death" or "rolls-replay", "full played" or "full-played-forgotten", whether "waxing" is allowed, and if so, opens the game to "secret waxing". There must also be some Year 9 punks on hand to pick up tennis balls that go out of play, which they can then either peg at the fattest player on the handball court, or throw onto the roof of the main building. Athletes have the choice of dobbing the Year 9 kid to a nearby teacher, which will get the ball back, but result in being stuffed into a locker at a later date.

Equestrian - there are heaps of paddocks around, so take your pick. Equestrian must only be allowed into the Canberra Olympics if the horses get a medal as well. Note: The archery and shooting events will all be held at the same venue at the same time. Extra points to the horse who can maintain its stupid walking/dancing dressage pattern while being shot at.

Gymnastics can be held at my old school gym. Athletes must make sure they put all the mats away after they use them though, including the giant blue crash mat. And no fucking around while they do it, the teachers aren't in the mood to have to rescue some idiot gymnast from Mexico who's been buried in old, dusty mats by some Ukranian bully.

Swimming events can be held at Macquarie Pool (I refuse to call it Big Splash), but only in the three lanes they have open for laps. If you get hit by a stray tennis ball, it's your own fault. Athletes may also opt to compete whilst going down the waterslides, although causing a blockage in the slides (especially on the Family Slide) will result in penalties, and your Slide Pass wrist-band will be confiscated. Races will also be held going down the Hurricane Twins. Athletes attending the Macquarie Pool events are advised to wear sandals or thongs, as there are a lot of prickles on the grass.

The kayak and canoes and sailboats and whatnot events don't interest me, so if they still want to do them, they can head to Lake Burley Griffin or Kambah Pool or something. I don't see why they can't organise their own things - they should just sms each other and say, "'LOL man ill b @ LBG tomoz @ 10 4 a race. u in?' and the other guys can reply with, "yeh sounds gd. c u den!" or "cn we make it l8r? i hav 2 go 2 my cuzs wedding lol who gets married during olympix?" and then "howz 5?" "yeh i think dats ok. will txt u if not. LOL mite hav 2 make it da nxt day evn!" "LOL yeh".
I love rowers.

The Marathon will be run close to my street, so I can watch from my balcony. But I'm not watching the whole thing; that shit gets boring. The course will lead them to the IGA at the bottom of my hill, where they are required to do some shopping and bring me beer and ice-cream (I'll provide a full shopping list closer to the event), and they can drop it off on my doorstep. They may also wash my car in lieu of this (water restrictions permitting).

Beach volleyball - nup. Get rid of it. We've got volleyball, just enjoy that.

Fencing will be replaced by battles of Street Fighter 2 - which can still be played at Theo's Take Away for 60c a game ($1 for double play). Athletes must decide whether to have normal salt or chicken salt during the event, and eat at least two potato scollops whilst competing.

The Athlete's Village is to be located at the University of Canberra student residences. Food to be provided by Baker Bob and Bagel Bob, with assistance from the G-Spot food wagon, 24-hour Drive-Thru McDonalds in Belconnen and cheap steak night at the Lighthouse. They can also eat at the Olympic venues, and choose to feast on traditional Australian/Canberran fare such as pies and sauce, sausage rolls and sauce, hot dogs and sauce, chips and sauce and noodles left over from the Multicultural Festival, all of which are burning on the outside and frozen in the middle. Sauce is 20c extra.

The Closing Ceremony (at Canberra Stadium [formerly Bruce Stadium], naturally) will involve a final showdown between Victor the Viking, Brumbie Jack, the pig from Hog's Breath, and the dog and cockatoo from Bate's Pet Paradise in a cage match. My money is on Victor, due to experience in the suit, but the Bate's Pet Paradise mascots have been biffing for years, and could surprise everyone.

With the crowd of athletes looking on, the Olympic Flame will be extinguished by Todd Carney in his usual manner, who will then jump into a ute and fang it out of there, taking the baton to the next delegate (hopefully they're in Goulburn, cause that's where Carney will probably go). With the smell of burnt rubber still fresh in the air, the sky will erupt in a decidedly half-arsed fireworks display, and the crowd will leave early, to "avoid the rush in the carpark." And so, as the curtain falls on Canberra 2016, the cleaners around Canberra Stadium will be the only ones there to hurry the athletes out so everyone can get home in time to watch Rove.

I was reading an idea from a purported sales expert. She recommends going into a sales appointment "naked." Her title even states: "Naked Sales Calls Pay Off." She writes about sales reps who she says are having extraordinary success since they started going into meetings without a brochure or any other collateral material.

"Armed with only notebooks and pens, they had nothing to hide behind. ... And because they were naked, with no brochures to fall back on, they had totally client-focused conversations." She concludes, "If you rely too heavily on your marketing collateral or samples, try shedding them for a while. Go naked into your sales calls, and try having a real discussion with your prospects instead of a pitch meeting. It won't be long before you start seeing a difference."

This idea is not only TOTALLY incorrect; it's borderline sales-criminal. This "naked" concept may have worked in 1908, but eh, not in 2008.

NOTE WELL: No prospect wants to see your literature. Every prospect expects you to be prepared, totally prepared, for the sales call.

To go into a sales appointment "armed with only a notebook and a pen" is not only an insult to a potential customer, it's also a guaranteed loss of sale to a competitor who decides to prepare in advance.

Here's what you need to arm yourself with to be ready for the sale:
1. Print their website information that you can impact. The pages that frame your ideas for how your product or service are best used by the prospective customer.
2. Print their website information that has leadership information. Who the real decision makers are. And by the way, if the person you're meeting with is not among the leaders of the company, you may not be talking to the person who will make the final decision.
3. Print their website information that you don't understand. This will give you an opportunity to create meaningful dialog with the prospect. This will give you conversation ideas and questions that relate to the prospect.
4. Have three killer questions you are CERTAIN your competition is not asking. This will create buyer engagement and respect.
5. Have two ideas that the prospective customer will benefit from. If you bring an idea, it shows you've prepared, and it shows you have genuine interest in helping.
6. Bring your laptop computer with wireless Internet capability. This gives you the ability to access any information you need in seconds.
7. On your laptop should be all your information in PDF format. This will enable you to show it, print it, and/or email it on the spot. HINT: Only show your sales literature and information when a prospect asks to see it. This is an indicator of interest, and prevents product puking.
8. Have video testimonials to support EVERY claim you make on your laptop, and on a separate DVD. This will enable you to show and PROVE, not just show and tell. And it will enable you to leave a copy of your testimonials with your prospect.
9. Have a fill-in-the-blank proposal and order form so you can instantly print, and give a customer a reason to buy now - or faster. And get a WOW! report card in the process.
10. Have a small laptop projector in case you have to give your presentation to more than one person. The power of projection makes you look big - and look professionally capable.
10.5 Show them the value, not the sales pitch. Be prepared to show the customer how they produce and how they profit from doing business with you.

Would you rather go in naked or prepared to make the sale? Walk into a sales call with only a pen and a pad of paper, and I guarantee that you will walk out of the sales call - or be thrown out of the sales call -- with nothing.

Do what I recommend, and you will be able to put the pen in the only place that matters - in the hand of the prospect, to sign an order.

EPILOGUE: To make matters worse, some other sales "expert" agreed that the "naked sales call" concept is a good one - and recommended it to his customer base. What an idiot.

There is one positive aspect to the losing concept of going into a sales call naked - maybe your competition will read about it and try it.

DAY 1
Excited about our stay in Vegas and a much needed day off on Friday, the team didn't mind the 5:30 wake-up this morning. We enjoyed yet another delicious Crew Chief breakfast consisting of the same generic brand cereal, half bagel w/ peanut butter, and half banana. Although the ride was the shortest to date, it was much tougher than anyone anticipated thanks to an unfavorable headwind. We knocked out the miles relatively quickly and prepared for our official arrival at a local middle school.

As we pulled into the parking lot, we were greeted by dozens of screaming children holding "Welcome Journey of Hope" and "Thank You Push America" signs. Judging by there reactions one would have thought we were famous pop stars. A representative from the mayor's office read an official proclamation declaring it Push America Day, and the team then filed inside to prepare for a Kids on the Block performance followed by our 1st wheelchair basketball game! Perhaps a bit cocky, the Journey of Hope South squad got completely trounced by some apparent ringers with much more experience that had been brought in to completely embarrass us. Billy was the obvious team leader/coach and a graduate from Boise State with a masters degree from Oregon State, but he had 2 teammates that caused us trouble all day - 2 girls around the age of 12 that were so quick down the court and crafty with their ability to set picks that our guys were left confused and helpless. Everybody had an amazing time and enjoyed the fellowship! Oh, and I shouldn't fail to mention that our opponents played the entire game while we rotated players every 5 minutes - this did nothing to provide the advantage we had hoped for. The children that had cheered so loudly upon our arrival tried to rally our team by chanting in unison, "J-O-H, J-O-H, J-O-H" but to no avail. I have never had a better time losing! After some pizzas and sodas for lunch the team headed to lodging at the UNLV campus.

Dinner that evening was sponsored by Drayton Perkins's family, and we invaded a local In Out fast food joint with ravenous appetites. I selected the double double combo (basically a double cheeseburger) with a chocolate milkshake. After dinner the team was set free for the evening, and I cruised the Strip with a group of guys to have a little fun before curfew. We walked by several of the major casinos and even played a little blackjack at O'Shea's, an Irish themed establishment with a local "everybody knows your name" kinda feel. Later in the evening we watched the world reknown fountain show outside the Bellagio where I payed $2 to take some photos with an Elvis and Marilyn Monroe impersonator.

DAY 2
Our day off from cycling in Las Vegas was a welcomed respite from the deserts of Nevada. Our Friendship Visits today were scheduled with the City of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation. First we were paired up with buddies and I was lucky enough to draw two for the day, Lashay and Tara. Immediately I realized that it would be difficult to communicate with either friend, Lashay being the more challenging of the two. Nervous that the day would be filled with many moments of awkward silence, I was hopeful that our visit to the Adventuredome at Circus Circus casino would allow me to connect in some way. The theme park did not disappoint with a multitude of rides, exhibits, and booths. I learned quickly that Tara had little reservations about the various rides as she jumped in line for the water ride, Pirate Ship, ferris wheel, the Inverter, and many more without hesitation. Smiling ear to ear she seemed to have a blast and showed no sign of tiring throughout the day. Unfortunately, Lashay did not have this same fearless attitude. I had great difficulty breaking the significant communication barrier that existed between the two of us. Either unwilling or unable to speak, it was quite a struggle to determine what she did and did not want to do. She stood in line for virtually every ride but would step back once we reached the front. I felt very dejected over my inability to involve her in the day's programming. HOWEVER, shortly before we were scheduled to leave I enlisted the help of one of the counselor's to coax her onto the water ride that climbed a steep track to the top of the facility and then dropped down into a pool of water. After a bit of persuading we somehow got Lashay to sit next to me on the boat, and I instantly became nervous that she would be terrified of the experience. Bringing along my new camcorder to record the entire thing, I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Wouldn't you know that halfway through the ride I glanced over at Lashay, and she was wearing the biggest smile on her face! Though brief, it was one of the most rewarding moments of my trip. Before leaving the park, a group of team members took over the Strenth-O-Meter to attempt to win prizes for all the children. Collectively we probably spent $40 at the $1 booth but successfully won stuffed animals for everyone.

That evening we attended a luau with our same group of friends and enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta salad, assorted fruits, and shaved ice (the crowd favorite). Everyone danced to the beach music while donning an assortment of colorful leis. I was again thrilled to be able to connect with Lashay by kicking the beachball back and forth. We were heavily engrossed in a game of volleyball/handball/soccer that left us last to eat. During the visit I met a new friend named Allysa, a young girl in a wheelchair that turned out to be quite the athlete. I talked with her mother for quite some time and exhanged information in the hopes to learn more. Allysa participates in Blaze Sports, a group that caters to athletes in wheelchairs that holds national competitions. It turns out that she is quite the basketball player and track athlete, competing in javelin, discuss, and various sprints. Bright-spirited and very friendly Allysa is a shining example of the focus that should be placed on abilities rather than disabilities.

Alas, we eventually had to leave for lodging in order to rest for our grueling 100+ mile ride into Arizona the following morning. We said our goodbyes, and I was sad to leave my favorite stop thus far in the trip.

First impressions, as they say, are most important. Visiting dignitaries, area citizens and those who do business with the city of Grants Pass will experience first hand, Websters definition of the term. Manager David Frasher (pronounced Fray-sher) is most able to produce a vivid impression upon those he meets. His memory is uncanny, his mind is sharp and youre immediately greeted with a keen sense of professionalism and charm. The city has good reason to be proud of him. His resume is an interesting read.
Manager Frasher is a member of ICMA, the International City/County Management Association. He is a highly professional administrator that manages the inner workings and day-to-day operations of a municipality. This, he says, frees elected officials from these time consuming tasks and empowers them to provide leadership, determine what services should be provided to the towns people, lobby the state legislature on the communitys behalf and communicate with constituents.
REPORTER: What is your professional view of the citys form of government?
MANAGER FRASHER: I believe its very effective and I might add the staff here at City Hall is exceptional, and I say that with reference to other places where I‘ve worked. Before I came here, I did my due diligence. The Daily Courier wasnt online at the time, and there was a lot of needed information that I just couldnt get. So I called other city managers around the state and two or three different times, unsolicited, they said to me that the executive staff group here has a state wide reputation of excellence. I was impressed with that but when I got here I found that it was all very true.
The Manager continued, We have had recent turnovers in some of those positions and are trying to replace them with people who are just as good as the ones we had. So that is a bit of a challenge right now. Ive appointed four major department heads, a new city attorney, human resources director, a finance director and a new public works director. This has been a real challenge for me as I think the city council should expect good judgment from their manager. You always have a finite amount of finances and resources to recruit talent to your organization, I know these folks have a lot of responsibility and the work they do is going to be a reflection of that, if I made a good decision to begin with. I take that really seriously because if history is any indication, these folks will be with us for a long time. If you are in these positions of authority and here for a long time, you will certainly have a big impact on the community, and I want it to be positive.
REPORTER: May I ask why you wanted to be a city manager?
MANAGER FRASHER: I chose this job because I didnt want to be bored and thought I could make a difference and make the world a better place in which to live on my own little scale and feel effective doing it.The City Manager is really a supporting arm to the elected officials, they set the overall policy where they want us to go and its up to me to see that it is executed. I think a professional manager is really an empowering agent for the elected officials to be successful. When they say these are our top priorities, somebody is going to get a report card at the end of the year on whether we did those things, and that somebody is whoever that manager is. I cant imagine how frustrating it would be to be an elected official and not have that sort of champion person thats going to go out and make those things happen for you.
REPORTER: A little bit about David Frasher?
MANAGER FRASHER: I was a practicing attorney and a member of the Alaska Bar Association. I was in law enforcement for ten years in Independence, Missouri, which included time as a homicide detective on the Metro Squad and I worked in the crime lab with CSI for about a year. Im a hiker and I recently took up playing the guitar. I have a passion for sports cars but, gas prices had a definite effect on that. I love to spend time with my family and friends. I have family in Kansas City that come out in the summers to visit and I have a couple of nieces and nephews I like to spoil.
REPORTER: A current hot topic for Josephine County is the possible hiring of a professional manager. Would you advocate this approach?
MANAGER FRASHER: Absolutely. A credentialed manager, such as an ICMA member, is needed to get the county back on track. Ive met the County Commissioners over the past few years and find they are decent people trying to do a good job. What I see is good people trapped in a failing system. I think the structure of the system is holding them back. It isnt a lack of desire, or necessarily a lack of commitment to the community or a lack of education. It doesnt really matter how educated you are in a system sort of designed for conflict. It appears to be a system that kind of ties your hands.
REPORTER: Whats the answer to the countys financial woes?
MANAGER FRASHER: The Task Force they appointed came up with some good recommendations which were well founded. Many of the things they recommended I would agree to if I was the countys consultant. I think one of the things that holds the county back is that every decision by the Commissioners is highly politicized. And this is not by design of the personalities we talk about; its the fault of the system. You can take the best possible people and put them in that system and youll have confusion and conflict. My staff has trouble at times with one directive. With three, as in three county commissioners, its practically impossible even with all being highly qualified, if such was the case. They wouldnt know where to go or how to get there. In other words, it would be chaotic by design, and that is the situation with the county.
Lets say the city has 22 departments and their concern is whos going to get the lions share of a particular resource or whos supposed to get what program to work with. When the County Commissioners have that discussion, its in front of the media often on TV and there is all of these political overtones to it that hold back sometimes a very cogent and open discussion and maybe a thoughtful argument about what should be done. The city settles that stuff here in a professional way through analysis in meetings we have at staff level, so by the time it gets to Council, those terms and details have been addressed, Council can make a decision and we move on. To me, its far more efficient and its not laced with un-necessary political overtones, which I think is whats happening at the county level.
The Manager added, Giving credit to the county system, there was a time in our history where this type of commissioner form of government made sense. Due to our contemporary complexities, the service levels and technicalities involved, the nature of the decisions that have to be made and the time in which you have to make them; the expectations of voters and our in general are all so drastically different than they were 100 years ago. The system just wasnt designed to change with all of those changing dynamics. And this is why the ICMA was founded. As within the old system, especially in larger cities, abuse and corruption flourished with the Strong Mayor form of government. You would have relatives of elected leaders receiving contracts and top positions in government. The corruption in American history is well documented and inspired the entire movement toward professional city managers to reduce that kind of stuff and restore some credibility to government operations.
REPORTER: Could the current County system be reformed or repaired?
MANAGER FRASHER: I dont believe the current system is fixable in its current form.
Some of the suggestions by the County Task Force, such as increase the number of Commissioners to 5 or 7 or more are a good idea this makes sense from another perspective, as well. We have 9 elected officials in Grants Pass and about 34,000 citizens. The county has a population of about 82,000 and only 3 officials. So, there is much less diversity and representation. The increase of commissioners will assist with political issues too, as you have more voices to advocate the cause and explain to the constituency. During the last proposed county levy there were only 3 officials to educate the public. This was in addition to running the day to day operations. I dont believe there is a chance of succeeding within that environment. It isnt humanly possible.
REPORTER: What will it take?
MANAGER FRASHER: At least 5 commissioners and a qualified professional county manager that they are willing to empower. This could lead to a more stabilized government and in turn help our economic development efforts because any investor who is risking dollars within a community will want to know the political and operational stability of the environment in which they are investing? The county has some of these factors and yet the city is trying to attract positive investors to the community as part of our economic development initiatives, sometimes its challenging. The more stable our area, the more attractive we are to investors. We want to work with the county and yet I have to be careful as I dont want to come across as all-knowing and have the magical answer. Its going to be a difficult challenge for the County Commissioners, no matter, and I want to respect their right and the voters.
REPORTER: How do city and county government operations compare?
MANAGER FRASHER: Our offices are about 200 feet apart. We have access to the same talent pool, the same education system, the same tax base, many of the same land use regulations and state statutes, the same street system, water system, transportation and, the same economic development opportunities. So these two organizations have all of those things in common yet when you look at the fiscal and financial stability and the long term sustainability of operations, the difference between the two government entities is like day and night. Now, why is that? Is it just because one received timber receipts all of these years or some sort of windfall from a piece of legislation? Thats part of it, certainly. But, I would like to think if it had the right structure, somebody would have been thinking that this current government structure isnt sustainable and needs to be redesigned to be less political and more professional. This would have lead to a different result because we have a very different result in the city structure.
REPORTER: Funding the county operations is the big picture today. How should it be accomplished? Is the sales tax (a preset percentage tax charged on goods you purchase, usually exempting food, drugs and big ticket items) idea a workable one?
MANAGER FRASHER: Sales tax would have to be small enough so you wouldnt drive to a neighboring town for a big ticket item. Or those items would have to be, in some way, exempted. The most effective financing streams for any government are always those, as in a business, utilizing diversity. The more diversity you have within the finance structure the better off you are. A sales tax, as a principal, especially if its a modest amount is a good approach as far as stabilizing the system they are looking at. The difficulty with a sales tax is that it should be at least on a regional level and better yet on a state level. If youre going to do a sales tax, the best possible scenario I think, would be a state-wide amount. Eventually, Oregon will probably be forced into it as when we compete with neighboring states, we are paying that tax. We are dealing with it. When we are not charging the same thing, we are also subsidizing our visitors, to some extent. And tourism is one of the fastest growing components of our local economy. I have family that comes in from Missouri. When we go out to eat and its time to pay the bill, they are dumbfounded when they dont see a sales tax at all, even 2 or 3%. They are used to seeing that. They wouldnt object. They do come here in big numbers in the summer and have a big impact on the service delivery. You and I are paying our share and they are not.
To rely on a straight sales tax or just a straight property tax can have social ill consequences. Thats why I think a common sense balance lies somewhere between those two funding mechanisms. It makes more sense as a matter of social policy and makes more sense from a professional business perspective.
REPORTER: Any thoughts on Sheriff Gilbertsons District Tax idea? (See Meet Sheriff Gilbertson in this section)
MANAGER FRASHER: I think that may be a viable approach and I expect Grants Pass voters would be more likely to support something if they feel they are not paying twice and I think the idea of having a jail district separate from rural patrols will give people a choice. It will take an educational process but I think it will be more supportive by Grants Pass citizens. They want a safe environment and are willing to pay for it.
REPORTER: You have been a resident of Grants Pass and Josephine County for over two years now. What do you have to say about our corner of the world?
MANAGER FRASHER: I love it..its people..the natural beauty and ‘Its The Climate.

the day started off with a nice early morning run along the streets of beautiful rome. We had a good breakfast and it was off to the Vatican. The Vatican, a country of it's own, was the main part of our day, we started off walking through the Basilica using a audioguide. The artwork, statues, and tombs were breath taking. An interesting story was behind each and every piece. There was so much to see and learn about, we know we only scratched the surface of the deep and meaningful history. Although hot, the view from the courtyard was almost as amazing as what was inside the actual buildings. The pillars seemed to symbolize the strength of the church and its culture. After the Basilica, we headed over to Cistine chapel which was also the place of the Vatican museums, where we spent a mere hour, not enough time to appreciate it to the fullest. The paintings, tapestries, statues in the museum were amazing, but nothing compared to the magnificence of the Cistine chapel. The artwork on the ceiling by Michealangelo was indescribable, and since no pictures were allowed, you'll have to witness it yourself. We took a ) small break in our day to celebrate my birthday (Meghan) and have a seista. Which came to an abrupt ending with a balloon bombing from the first floor balcony. A strategic move of Mike in the ongoing battle of pranks. The main target (Meghan) was missed (barely) but a few other innocent bystanders were caught in the cross fire. Amoung those, a few local Italians who were not impressed by their soaked motorcycles. We dispersed but met up again quickly to refuel on ice cream before heading out again to view the streets of Rome while taking in some shopping. We wandered at our own pace and discretion through the streets of Rome, stopping at a local restaurant to eat some authentic pasta. There was some confusion when we came up 40 euros short, but later was cleared up. There was some hidden taxes. As we wandered through the streets we came upon the lit up wedding cake, which Alyssa mistook for the Empire State Building and White House. Just joking. As we were continuing on our way, Brian and Mike decided to attempt to throw me in the fountain. I held off for a considerable amount of time, but decided to let them get the upper hand so their egos wouldn't be bruised too badly. Meanwhile, a random bystander egged them on. After this incident, we preceded on our walk and viewed the Colliseum. This time by night. While walking around the Collisuem we heard an outrageous cry from across the street. We crossed the square to check it out and had to rock jump and pull some Rambo moves, only to find out that it was a play and we had gone to the wrong side. We tried to get a view of what was going on but was unsuccessful. We made our way back to the hotel and on the way, we find out that Mike had gotten into a fight with some lions and tigers at the Colliseum and had acquired a dark streak of dirt tears from his amazing victory. Somewhere in the middle of this chaos, he also claimed to have defeated the whole country of Sparta by himself. He then took Sparta as his last name. We hope this will become official. Along with the first name Raul.

Welcome!
So why AndrewPointon.Com? A few months ago a senior manager where Andrew works told him that if he put his mind to it he could do anything he wanted to in life. Other people have been kind enough to tell Andrew he is an individual with many hidden talents. This site is an experiment to try to bring some of those talents to the fore. It is intended to be a vehicle to attempt to develop new skills like web design and administration. It is also an attempt to bring to a wider audience the gifts that have earned Andrew praise, like writing and photography. The photograph of Wastwater in the Lake District which features in the sites header was taken by Andrew during August 2007. He is very pleased with it and trusts you will think it merits display. The site will evolve, it will be a journey. Only time will tell where it heads and if it fulfils its purpose. Hopefully you will enjoy the ride.

When the housing market is hot, it seems like just about any project is a good investment for boosting your home's value and appeal. But when the market's tight, you want to be more selective about which projects you undertake and what you expect to gain in return. There's nothing worse than wasting time and money on a major project that barely raises the value of your house.
If you've been thinking about increasing your home's value or just making your living space more comfortable, these ideas can help you start off simple and prioritize your list. Before you start knocking out walls and renovating your roofline, consider these ways to make a difference...cost-effectively!
1. Spruce Up Your Curb Appeal
Buyers often decide whether to look at your house before they even get out of the car. So, before you spend a lot of time and money remodeling the inside, take a good look at the outside. Washing windows, repainting trim, planting flowers and small shrubs, trimming tree branches and overgrown bushes, fixing screens, resealing your driveway, and mowing the lawn can make a big difference. Start out by making a list of 4 to 7 simple projects and then set aside an hour or two each day. In just one week, you - and potential buyers - will be surprised how appealing and welcoming your house looks when driving up.
You may also want to consider larger projects, such as replacing the siding, adding a patio or deck, or even replacing a dilapidated driveway. But remember, although these bigger projects may help your house stand out, they probably won't yield as high of a qualitative return on investment in terms of your home's actual value. So, weigh your options and ask your Realtor for advice before investing in any of these bigger projects.
2. Does Your Entryway Invite People In?
A cozy first impression is crucial. Now that you've boosted your curb appeal, it's time to turn your attention inside - starting just inside the front door. To make sure your entryway invites people to come in - rather than turnaround and run - try adding a wicker chair and table outside the door along with a fresh coat of paint to your foyer.
For even more impact, replace old light fixtures and update the floor in your entryway with a throw rug or easy-to-apply self-adhesive linoleum squares. These projects are inexpensive and easy enough to do yourself in just a few hours.
3. Spiff Up that Old Bathroom
Remodeling an old bathroom can make a big impact. You should start by simply de-cluttering the countertop. It's amazing how spacious even a small bathroom appears after the styling products, pictures and miscellaneous bathroom decorations are removed.
From there, you can freshen up the paint, replace that old shower curtain, add a new medicine cabinet on the wall, and even a upgrade your faucet and shower head for very little money. For a little more, you can also install a double sink or re-tile the floor.
4. Hot in the Kitchen
Renovating an outdated kitchen is practically a sure thing - as long as you don't splurge on extravagant items like hand-painted Italian tile or built-in espresso machines. Instead, focus on the basics: replacing the handles on your cabinets and drawers, freshening up the paint, installing new flooring, adding a backsplash, and painting or re-facing your existing cabinets. You can also make a dramatic impact by installing new countertops and even replacing your appliances. All of these projects will go a long way to making a new buyer feel at home.
5. Add a Second Bathroom
Perhaps no improvement makes a bigger impact on your family's comfort and your house's appeal than adding a second bathroom. The number of bathrooms is always a big sticking point for potential buyers, especially families with two or three children.
Although adding a bathroom costs more than simply fixing up your old one, it also increases the value of your house more. Plus, having that second bathroom may help you sell your house faster than if it only has one, which is an important point to consider in today's market. So, if you have a house with roughed-in plumbing just waiting for you to take the initiative, you may want to consider adding that second bathroom you've always wanted.
However, if your house doesn't have roughed-in plumbing or floor plans that called for a future bathroom, you'll definitely want to consult a professional Realtor to discuss how much a second bathroom will add to your home's value. After all, if you have to start moving walls and re-plumbing your house just to add a bathroom, you may find that your time and money are better spent on a handful of smaller projects that will ultimately add more impact.
Plan Ahead and Avoid Headaches
Overall, the best advice about adding value to your home is to start small, work your way up, and always plan ahead. You don't want to get halfway into a renovation only to find that you have to update your entire electrical system or that your time and effort was wasted on a renovation that doesn't add as much value as you thought. With a little planning and prioritizing, you can make your house more comfortable and valuable with very little time and money. Happy renovating!

Jet Airways is an airline based in Mumbai, India, operating domestic and international services. It operates over 400 daily flights to 62 destinations. Its primary base is Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport with secondary hubs in Bangalore, Brussels, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune.

According to March 2008 figures, Jet's share of India's domestic aviation market is 29.8%, which includes its low-cost subsidiary JetLite's share of 7.1%. This is down from 31.3% a year ago, and has been attributed to the increased capacity from low cost carriers, including Spicejet, Indigo and Go Air

History of Jet Airways
Jet Airways was incorporated as an "Air Taxi" operator on 1 April 1992. It started commercial airline operations on 5 May 1993 with a fleet of 4 Boeing 737-300 aircraft. In January 1994, a change in the law enabled Jet Airways to apply for scheduled airline status, which was granted on 4 January 1995. It began international operations to Sri Lanka in March 2004. While the company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 80% of its stock is controlled by Naresh Goyal (through his ownership of Jets parent company, Tailwinds, and has 10,017 employees (at March 2007).

Naresh Goyal, who already owned Jetair (Private) Limited, which provided sales and marketing for foreign airlines in India, set up Jet Airways as a full-service scheduled airline to compete against state-owned Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines had enjoyed a monopoly in the domestic market between 1953, when all major Indian air transport providers were nationalised under the Air Corporations Act (1953), and January 1994, when the Air Corporations Act was repealed, following which Jet Airways received scheduled airline status.

Jet Airways and Air Sahara were the only private airlines to survive the Indian business downturn of the early 1990s. In January 2006, Jet Airways announced that it would buy Air Sahara for $500 million in an all-cash deal, making it the biggest takeover in Indian aviation history. The resulting airline would have been the country's largest but the deal fell through in June 2006.

On 12 April 2007, Jet Airways agreed to buy out Air Sahara for 14.5 billion rupees ($340 million). Air Sahara was renamed Jet Lite, and was marketed between a low-cost carrier and a full service airline. With the acquisition of Air Sahara, Jet Airways is set to refurbish the fleet and crew with a new livery and uniform.

Brand ownership

Jet Airways does not own its brand. The brand is owned by Jetair Enterprises Ltd., a separate company substantially owned by Naresh Goyal, which licenses the brand to the airline in return for an annual payment. This arrangement is very similar to the terms governing the use of the "easy" brand by the easyJet Airline Company Limited (the name under which easyJet has been incorporated).

Under the aforesaid arrangement, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder and largest individual shareholder of easyJet Airline Co. Ltd. has sole ownership of the "easy" brand and licenses it to that airline for a specified payment. This kind of arrangement is of vital importance should the concerned airlines become the subject of a hostile takeover bid because the bidder[s] will not automatically acquire ownership of their takeover target's brand and without access to the brand the takeover target will be less valuable.

Destinations
Jet Airways currently serves 62 destinations. In addition to destinations across India and the Subcontinent (Colombo, Dhaka, Kathmandu), Jet Airways have expanded international operations to include destinations in Asia (Bangkok, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Singapore), Europe (Brussels, London), the Middle East (Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Kuwait, Muscat) and North America (New York, Newark, San Francisco, Toronto).

Jet Airways operates a scissors-hub in Brussels, with three Indian cities (Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai) connected to three North American cities (New York, Newark, Toronto) through said hub.

Most recently, on 14 June 2008, Jet started daily services on the Mumbai-Shanghai-San Francisco route, with plans to add services to Vancouver and Los Angeles through Shanghai in the future.

El Team in Old (Downtown) Wichita with 18 time City Champion Gale and fellow baller, Gary

The Wichita YMCA Clinic completed at 2pm and The Team was on the road at 2:30pm and cranked out 97.6 miles as the sun was going down.

Where is The Team headed?

Kansas City here we come!

The Team pulled into Kansas City on Sunday morning after 196 miles (over a day of off and on riding). We quickly rode to St. Louis, MO to watch Dave Chapman play Marty Hogan in a Hands vs. Racquet match. Meanwhile, I flew home to California from STL (before the infamous match) to gather more supplies; rejoining the Team at DC's home for relaxation and training leading up to the 4-Wall National Championships.

The Bike tour will resume after the USHA Nationals, June 16th thru 22nd. We will post updates from the tournament right here, as DF and EP hope to play each other in the finals in both singles and doubles.

On May 19th, 2008, two world class athletes and personalities known simply as The Team embarked on a 3000 mile/25 city Bike Tour starting in San Francisco, California and potentially ending in New York City to promote and play the extreme sport of handball across the Heartland of America. The Team is comprised of the devastatingly handsome and sublime professional musician, Emmett Peixoto, who is also the #2 ranked world handball pro and his eccentric side-kick, and strangely lovable best pal, David Fink. Fink is currently ranked #7 in the world (with a bullet), according to the World Pro Handball Rankings. The Team made stops in: San Francisco, Berkeley, Sacramento, and Grass Valley, CA, then rode across the Nevada Border making stops in Reno and Elko, Nevada to play ball. While in Utah, the Team played handball in Salt Lake City (4 and 1-wall) before riding to Grand Junction, CO to play Fronton Handball and 4-wall handball with the locals. The Team will not only impart their vast handball knowledge, prodigious handball talent and charm in various handball clinics and exhibitions, but will also be playing in the 2 most prestigious events on the handball calendar The USHA 1 and 4-wall Nationals.

The Team is riding across America to raise money for professional handball and production costs for a youth instructional handball video.

Backoff From The Baseball Coach
With the regulated top of any season of baseball, the parents have the high hope that their child is principal with the success of team. It with a degree is true. The success of the team depends on each player. The problems emerge between the prospects for the parents, the players and the trainer.
We each one have our own image of art of the self-portrait which is completely different probable with the way in which the rest of the world sees us. This also applies to our vision of our children. The crushing of the ball for the dad in back court is large, but it always does not transfer to diamond. By no means if any relative expects that the confidence of back-yard competes with on the execution of field. It is a bar which will obtain probably struck in addition to stands each time.
Coach of all the levels of experiment are more qualified position and play the players. The trainer has a vision in the way in which all the parts will function out of tandem. As a relative, we must respect that in all the levels of play. This until catch held by anybody the responsibility to be a trainer of baseball when nobody other. A its responsibility which takes a substantial quantity of abuse.
I was pilot parents and the grandparents tear in bottom of a trainer during a play in an effort to leave the weaker players and to restructure the vision. Its solution lit completely. The every 5 to 10 minutes, it turned all the players jusqu to various positions, the jugs, gloves of baseball as moving and stop to put it except play.
They lost terribly, but as from this moment henceforth it was allowed to give lessons particular to the remainder of the season without badger of launderer. That functioned because while the key the players were turned in the right the position, they all made errors starting from the simple contagious errors with why made you through with initially when the runner stole the third .
It primarily had the loss (more than 30 to 0) a complete effort of the community. Because each one was responsible for the loss, those which gave particular lessons of the grandins obtained a taste that they could not spit outside.
Will this tactic function for each one? I do not have really any idea, but it is a solution which I will not forget soon.
The participation of relative is marvellous. Obtain implied, obtain in the play. Here some things to be maintained in the spirit as a relative
1 Dont arrive at the field when the practice is supposed to start. If programmed time is 5:30, are there by 5:15. It reduced the effort of the conduit of precipitations and of the hour or thus of the programmed practice time is not wasted on the greetings and the jabber of jibber.
2 be useful, time the establishment lost the field or the exercise is right which lost. If one does not write to him, ask the trainer of what is the plan for the day and along what you can make to help of the things. The players want to do that just, play. Time with vacuum lost while the installation of the next drill of competence loosens the gained hearth of the precedent.
3 never correct, howl, discipline or differently decrease the authority of the trainer in front of the players or other parents. If you have concern or comments, put side the hour in your day of speaking with the trainer in private. It can be your prospect which needs the correction.
respect 4 each one. Trainers, assistances, parents, referees, players, teams of opposition, it does not import which or what are they compared to your team. Each one deserves the respect which should not be gained. The respect of others will have like consequence of others respecting you.
Consider what it is to play the baseball. What want you that your children carry with them when their days of play are relegated to the league of church. For me hope of I for, respect for itself, confidence in their capacities, identification of their limits, ethics of work of the practice and the concept to collaborate with a team and the perpetual friendships which it can bring.
