If you like drama, then Canadas heart-stopping, lurching, improbably comeback win over South Korea Wednesday morning was for you. There was conflict, tension and a major plot twist - and that was before the Canadian national team even left their hotel. According to multiple sources, the decision to have Philadelphia 76ers centre Samuel Dalembert leave the team came just hours before Canadas do-or-die win against South Korea.
National team coach Leo Rautins confronted Dalembert as the team bus was about to leave for the arena, questioning his commitment to the team. Dalembert in turn challenged Rautins. One source said it was Rautins who told Dalembert to get lost, while another said it wasnt clear who had the final word, only that there was mutual agreement the team and its high-profile centre should part ways.
Attempts to reach Dalembert yesterday were unsuccessful, but his agent, Marc Cornstein, disputed the notion his clients commitment to the national team program was ever in doubt.
I did talk to him briefly, Cornstein said from Las Vegas. The only thing I can say is questioning any type of commitment on Sams part is ludicrous. Its been extremely difficult to get high level NBA players to become part of the national team program and Sam not only made the effort last year to get his Canadian citizenship, he committed his off-season last year to helping Canada qualify for Greece.

Guard Justin Tubbs is transferring to East Tennessee State after leaving Alabama and will have two years of eligibility left once he sits out the upcoming season. ETSU coach Murry Bartow announced the transfer Monday. The 6-foot-3, 188-pound Tubbs from Trussville, Ala., was an Academic All-Southeastern Conference pick during his first two seasons with Alabama. He played in 19 games and averaged 7.3 minutes, 3.1 points and 1.2 rebounds for the Crimson Tide as a sophomore, down from 9.6 minutes as a freshman. Tubbs, an accounting major, said he connected with the coaching staff, and he feels they had a plan for his future.

The Lost Link To All Basketball Players

With so many drills and different ways to practice to improve your game, you could very easily get confused and frustrated trying to compile a perfect practice plan. Some of the main components I have always stressed with all my private basketball clients, whether they are beginners or a NBA Veteran, is to try and train smarter and just harder.
A major component you have to consider when trying to design a Basketball Improvement system is to leverage your time wisely and work on the areas that are most important to you and your game. To use an example, if you are a point guard, your main job is to be able to handle the rock under control and pressure, control the pace of the game, make sure all your teammates are doing their job correctly and be your coaches on the court general.
Why it would be great if you were a great rebounder, it is not something that you should spend alot of time practicing. You should focus the majority of your time practicing and improving the areas that are most required. Try not to get caught up in trying to work on every aspect of basketball, there just is not enough time to work on every thing in one practice.
I have outlined a Practice plan that I use to structure all of my Pro Clients workouts, they are very effective and time efficient. The practice will last approximately 1 hour and will begin with a Sports Warm-Up. Sports Warm Up ( 15 minutes) It is very essential you participate in an active warm up that will prepare you for a vigorous work out ahead. The days of static stretching as a team are long over, due to the fact that you want to prepare your self for moving, running, and explosive burst, you want to prepare your body to handle certain movements and game situations. I normally have all my players run 4 to 5 times around the court at about 50%, and then follow that up with 4 half court layups from both the right and left side. Then, we perform 3 full court layups on each side, right and left. Then we move onto two ball dribbling, full court and back 3 times, two ball alternating dribbling full court and back, 3 times, and then finish with a couple of dynamic warm up stretches that improve the mobility, stability, and flexibility of certain muscle groups.
Basketball conditioning ( 10 minutes)
I have always like jumping right into some conditioning drills as my players perform better when we get conditioning done at the beginning of practice. Many practices, the exercise or drills will change and vary, but the principles remain the same. I usually compile 6 conditioning drills that we will perform only once, but at 100% intensity. I will then give them a 30-45 second break and then move onto the next conditioning drill. We do not perform the drills for certain amount of reps, but rather for a duration of time. Usually lasting 30-45 seconds. Hers is a sample Conditioning workout:
Exercise # 1 suicide ( 30 seconds)
Rest(45seconds)
Exercise # 2 ( machine guns while dribbling a basketball) 30 seconds
Rest (45 seconds)
Exercise # 3 Basketball Pushups with a basketball( 20 seconds on each side)
Rest(45 seconds)
Exercise #4 Full court Defensive slides( 35 seconds)
Rest ( 45 seconds)
Exercise # 5 Net or rim touches ( 30 seconds)
Rest ( 45 Seconds)
Exercise # 6 Push Up Holds ( 45 seconds)
Rest Until 10 minutes is up
As you can see, if you structure your workouts and practices correctly, you can get a very effective practice in a short period of time. The next 10 minutes will solely focus on shooting. I have a simple rule when trying to improve your shooting. Think of the 5 most common shots and area that you are most likely to shoot in a game and work on those 5 shots the most. It is almost a waste of time if you are a center trying to improve your 3 point shooting. Once you have figured out your 5 most common shots, spend 2 minutes each working on them and getting up as many shots as you can in those 2 minutes from those specific spots. You will be surprised when you start working on only a couple of shoots how much more you will improve compared to trying to shoot from every where. After you finish working on your shooting, you will then dedicate the next 10 minutes on ball handling. There are millions of drills that will improve your ball handling skills and you can pick which ever ones you like, but follow these rules when you do so.
1. Try not to ever look down at the ball.
2. Try your hardest not to mess up.
3. Involve as much running and movement as you can.
4.When you have mastered a drill, do not continue to do the same drill,
move on to a more challenging drill.
5. Try to incorporate multitasking drills as much as possible, like 2 ball dribbling,
the more you can do at the same time the better.
Follow those rules and you will see a dramatic improvement in your over all game.
Now that you have gotten past those stations, it is time now to move on to the most important aspect of the practice. The last 15 minutes will solely be committed to working on your niche, the most important component of your game.
What Is Your Niche?
This is by far the most over looked aspect in basketball. A niche is what you do best, it is the one thing that you do great, the thing that separates you form the baller next to you. The One thing you can provide the team, and what the coach can count on you for.Without a Niche, you have no identity on the court. If you look at all the Kings in the NBA, you will easily discover their Niche.
Steve Nash- passing
Ben Wallace- Rebounding
Dwayne Wade- attacking the basket
Mike Miller- Shooting
Kobe - Scoring
And the list goes on.
Spend the last 15 minutes working and mastering your niche. Whatever it is, whether it be shooting, rebounding, ball handling, defense, scoring, driving to the basket, 3 point shooting, ect Work on mastering and improving it. I guarantee you that if you take this outline and use it to structure your workouts and practices, you will have more improvement in a couple of weeks then you probably have had your whole career. Improving your game is easy when you do it the right way.

Are you wondering how to find a good agent that fits your professional basketball goals? Well honestly before you can know you have to research and ask around from players who currently is under contract with a particular agent or ask specific questions to find it if he/she is worth signing with.
For men and women, the topic of basketball representation is a little bit different. The market for men basketball players and women is a noticeably large and far gap. There are hundreds of men basketball agencies in the world and as a male you would have a lot of work finding one agent that suit your particular need. On the contrary, female basketball agents are far and few to come by, but many exist. Mostly, networking throughout different countries and with the help of some men basketball agents, the list can grow.
But how do you decide which agency is best for you? First, I recommend yourself writing a list of your basketball goals. They can be short term or long term for your professional career, but you MUST write them down. Second, honestly determine your game and decide who you game mostly can be compared to or even better. This will help you find an agency that will most likely willing to work with you.
Note: Contacting any agency without an adequate profile and stats to back up your game, you are limiting your choices.
Once you find a list of good basketball agents, create a letter which can be duplicated asking several questions to the agent which can help you decide on what youre looking for. If you already have basketball agents knocking on your door this list is recommended for you as well.

The college basketball coach with the most victories and direct ties to Memphis is on this list: Gene Bartow, John Calipari, Larry Finch, Jerry C. Johnson and Vertis Sails Jr. If you selected Johnson, the legendary coach of the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians, you’re on your game.
On June 20, the Memphis Chapter of the LeMoyne-Owen College Alumni Association will host a citywide toast of Johnson and a celebration of the coach’s 90th birthday. The special evening at the Holiday Inn Select on Democrat Road will also launch the Jerry C. Johnson Scholarship Program at the college.
Johnson is one of only 10 college basketball coaches in history to win more than 800 games. During his 46-year coaching career at LeMoyne-Owen, Johnson won 821 games, a national championship, 10 conference championships, and made several N.C.A.A. tournament appearances.
Three years ago, Johnson retired from coaching. Since then he has received numerous honors for his outstanding career. He was inducted into the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (S.I.A.C.) Hall of Fame, the Fayetteville State University Hall of Fame, and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. The coach of the year award for the S.I.A.C. is now The Jerry C. Johnson Coach of the Year Award. And in 1991, LeMoyne-Owen College awarded Johnson an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
With all his victories and awards, Johnson said he takes the greatest pride in seeing the youngsters who played for him “grow and develop into contributing members of their communities.”
Memphis Mayor Dr. Willie W. Herenton is among the most recognized of Johnson’s former players.
“Herenton had not played much basketball before joining my team. Over time (he) became a good rebounder and valuable member of the team,” said Johnson, who chuckled as he recalled that Herenton, a champion boxer, was a real asset sometimes in the small Southern towns where a team from Memphis was not welcomed with open arms.
David “Smokey” Gaines is another of Johnson’s high profile former players. After LeMoyne-Owen, Gaines played for the Harlem Globetrotters and the Kentucky Colonels of the old A.B.A. Later, Gaines was one of the pioneering African American coaches at so-called majority institutions when he became the head coach at the University of Detroit and at San Diego State.
“Johnson was so successful that he almost didn’t have to recruit players because so many wanted to play at LeMoyne-Owen,” said Gaines.
That observation draws a smile from Johnson.
“Gaines must have a bad memory because recruiting was always one of my strengths,” he said.
Several of Johnson’s former players have become outstanding basketball coaches. That list includes Vertis Sails, the legendary coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Robert Newman, the leading scorer on Johnson’s national championship, heads the successful girls basketball program at Melrose High School.
Coach Johnson also had a hand in the development of Tony Johnson (no relation), who is considered one of the best athletes to attend LeMoyne-Owen. Tony Johnson earned All American honors in basketball and baseball, and played major league baseball for the Montreal Expos and Toronto Blue Jays.
LeMoyne-Owen board chairman Robert Lipscomb did not play basketball at LeMoyne-Owen, but he was a member of the cross-country team that Johnson coached. Lipscomb now runs the Memphis Housing Authority and the Division of Housing and Community Development for the City of Memphis.
Johnson said he landed in Memphis and LeMoyne-Owen almost by accident.
While a student at Fayetteville State University, Johnson met John McClendon, the renowned African-American basketball coach who was then at North Carolina Central College. McClendon, who learned his basketball from Dr. James Naismith, the recognized inventor of the game, took Johnson under his wing.
McClendon – the first African American to coach a professional basketball team – left North Carolina to take the head coaching position at Tennessee State University in Nashville in the late 1950’s. Johnson planned to follow McClendon to Nashville, but McClendon learned the LeMoyne-Owen coaching position was open and almost demanded that Johnson accept the job.
During his early years at LeMoyne-Owen, Johnson’s teams played all comers, including several that now would be considered Division 1 schools. That prepared his teams for the smaller colleges in LeMoyne-Owen’s conference.
Johnson’s 1974-75 team won a national championship, and as he recalled they “had a pretty easy time winning because we were battle tested.”
With so many good teams during his 46-year tenure, Johnson said he is not sure which was the best. One of the better teams, he said, was the 1999-2000 team that won the S.I.A.C. championship and made the NCAA Tournament.
That year, Johnson coached against the current University of Tennessee Coach, Bruce Pearl. Pearl was then the coach of the University of Southern Indiana. LeMoyne-Owen lost narrowly after center Wade Evans fouled out just after the second half began.
Johnson had opportunities to coach elsewhere, including at a Big 10 Conference offer that he and his family vetoed because they loved Memphis.
Family is a big deal to Johnson. For 53 years, he was married to the late Vaster Johnson, an elementary school teacher for over 50 years. The couple had three children, Wandra Johnson Haywood, a nurse with the Veterans Administration in Florida, Dr. Jerry Johnson Jr., a physician in Philadelphia, and Oliver Johnson, a computer professional who lives in Atlanta.
Mayor Herenton will headline next week’s event in recognition of Johnson. Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton, U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, Tennessee House Speaker Pro Tempore Lois Deberry, U of M Coach John Calipari, and Southwest Tennessee Coach Vertis Sails Jr. will be among the many dignitaries paying tribute to Johnson. Many of Johnson’s National Championship team members will attend, along with dozens of former players from other years.
“The celebration on June 20 will not only recognize Coach Johnson’s lifetime of achievement, but will insure that his legacy will continue forever,” said Jeffrey Higgs, the executive director of the Lemoyne-Owen College Community Development Corporation. The scholarships named for Coach Johnson will help future student athletes pursue both their athletic and educational goals.

(*old Doctor Who, of course. Wonderfully bad because they had no money special effects.)

Last night's allergy-headachy-heaty fever dreams:

A Boy Gregory, mad because They (the usual They, parents, teachers, evil adults all) forced him out of PE classes and sports and made him take part in a Cool Extracurricular Science Activity, one in which we'd be able to participate in Daring Research on Dinosaurs that would uncover new truths, all because as a Nerd Gregory was supposed to like this Sort of Thing, and all he really wanted to do was play soccer, but always tripped over the ball because this is what Nerds Do. And then I was in the lab, grumbling and angry, looking in a microscope and seeing little tiny dinosaurs moving around, only they weren't dinosaurs, they were these weird flying Doctor Who monster tentacle things, and I fell down the microsope like it was a rabbit hole and ended up on a space station. A band of people, desperately trying to stay alive. An impassioned plea by one man for another, accused of being the coconspirator of the alien menace. Have, mercy, he begged, have mercy on my friend, he's a good man, it's not his fault. And then the man put out the airlock, and the creatures attacking, flopping off off walls and ceilings in unconvincing special effects ways. The creatures eat everything that is important to being human, leaving behind void-filled shells that can only consume.

I awoke thirsty, headachy, bleary eyed, dizzy, like I had a hangover. Which just isn't fair, a hangover without having had a good, proper drunk before it. I mean, when was the last time I even had alcohol? Not fair, not fair. Allergies suck.

The sudden onslaught of Tucson summer heat is the anvil, the allergies the hammer, my head the sword. This is why insomnia is so often my summer companion, and it's so easy to enter a weird sleep-deprived state where everything is tinged surreal. At work today I kept expecting to see the flying creatures, could almost hear their whispers. The steady entrance of some of our regulars was like a series of anchors to reality, keeping me from floating off into a bizarro land of De Chirico meets Giger meets Dali meets The Yellow Submarine.

Weather.com says 111F tomorrow, or rather today, since it's 1 A.M. already. Tucson is a fevered dream, a shimmering mirage, a heat rash. Yeah, I have a rash going on, too, part of my summer allergy fun, made worse by the heat. Pat me on the head, let me cry on your shoulder. Or at least sigh and dream of coolness. Don't be surprised if I flinch when you touch me, because my skin feels like a creepy crawly iggy wiggy expanse of hypersensitivity. And right when I seem to be craving touch like a drug.

Game overview
First quarter Braves Lead 14- 04
Second quarter Braves Lead 30-18
Third quarter Braves Lead 52-32
Fourth quarter Braves Lead 81-40.
Braves took control of the game from the jump ball and lead from the beginning to the end. The Belfield team was a very young team with a few experience players but they were out rebounded and just could not get pass the aggressive defensive played by Braves. Coach Hutson had the chance to run the younger guys within the Braves team. It was a bit disappointing for Braves team because all of their players were not there.
Top scorers for Belfied were Basil Weatherhead and Russell Harper who scored 10 points each. Braves top scorers were Damain Leacock with 18 points, Michael Toppin 14pts, Andrew Gibbs 12pts and Ron Taitt who was recovering from the flu with 11pts.
Coaches comments:
1st and 2nd quarter Belfield players worked the ball around and broke the defense very often. this shows us the areas we need to work on and also the player who were not performing their roles in the defense . Adjustments were made in the 3rd and 4th quarter and this arrested the Belfield offensive charge and they had difficulty in scoring consistently. Our fast breaking needs alot more work but an effort was made to get it going in the 4th quarter. The players seemed to be more comfortable playing the half court game and continually broke the Belfield defense down and scored 22 points in the 3rd quarter and 29 in the 4th quarter.

team is almost assured of a place in the final but when they get there; they better have their game face on otherwise it will be another close encounter against their perennial rivals The Glen High School. As far as their U16 team goes, they have a few stand out players but they have to learn to play as a team otherwise they might be in for a shock. At U14 it’s a difficult one to call since there are some unexpected results at every school. These are the rookies so a bit of inconsistency is expected.

All teams must make the state playoffs and all must win the championship.

If a team does not win the championship, it will be on probation until they are the champions, and coaches will be held accountable. If after two years they have not won the championship their basketballs and equipment will be taken away until they do win the championship.

All players will be expected to have the same basketball skills at the same time, even if they do not have the same conditions or opportunities to practice on their own. No exceptions will be made for lack of interest in basketball, a desire to perform athletically, or genetic abilities or disabilities of themselves or their parents.

All students will play basketball at a proficient level

Talented players will be asked to workout on their own, without instruction. This is because the coaches will be using all their instructional time with the athletes who aren't interested in basketball, have limited athletic ability or whose parents don't like basketball.

Games will be played year round, but statistics will only be kept in the 4th, 8th, and 11th games.

If parents do not like this new law, they are encouraged to vote for vouchers and support private schools that can screen out the non-athletes and prevent their children from having to go to school with bad basketball players.
