Two weeks ago, Superstars on Ice was going in Korea. I loved the cast which was made up of Mao Asada, Jeff Buttle, Miki Ando, Sasha Cohen, Evan Lysacek, Stephane Lambiel, Na-Young Kim, Alexei Yagudin, Pang and Tong, Belbin and Agosto, and Dubreuil and Lauzon. Thanks to all the amazing fans who recorded home video, I was able to pretty much see all of the performances from a variety of angles! The opening number was a hoot! (Thank you to YouTube user piw08 for recording the broadcast and posting!) I'll just talk about the opening...

The song they used was Usher's Love in This Club. Mao and Alexei were the most awkward couple...it was cute. When it came to the "hip action" part, they had the biggest gap. Na-Young and Jeff were adorable...Jeff was really working the hip action! Stephane and Miki had tons of chemistry! They could've been dancing in a real club (sans skates) and they would have blended right in. I think Marie-France has great rhythm! She looked the least awkward with the "chest flexes" and some of the other individual moves. Tanith and Ben weren't half bad either...Ben's expression in some places cracked me up. Pang and Tong looked like they were having such a great time! They were really into the whole thing. I especially liked the moment in the first show where they were doing the "dance in the club" part of the opening. Jian said or did something and Qing slapped him in the chest. I love their new exhibition to Summertime. Maybe their short program will be in the same vein (slow blues/jazz) although I would think that they'd be doing something faster since they're trying to change styles.

Last week, there was Mao's show, The Ice. Sasha, Evan, Miki, Jeff, and Alexei continued on to Japan from Korea. One big highlight was the Mao/Jeff pair number. It was so adorable! At one of the shows, Jeff kissed Mao on the cheek at the end of the number. Her reaction was priceless! Someone also posted a special on YouTube where Mao and her sister Mai took Evan, Jeff, and Sasha (later they meet up with Mirai Nagasu) around Nagoya. They were incredibly hospitable which transcended the language barrier between them all (having a bilingual host accompanying them might have helped some). One thing I've noticed about Evan is that he's pretty dorky (I mean that in a good way). There was a segment where Evan and Jeff were shopping together and they wander into this shop that sells glasses. Evan tried on a few pairs before buying one. The thing that made me laugh was that the glasses that he bought looked just like the ones Mr. Bennett from Heroes wears!

About Skate Canada: I've really been hesitating on the whole thing. Hotel/flight prices have come down but I still haven't bought anything (not even my event tickets!!!). I've got all these fears in my head. The biggest one of course is: What if I don't have a good time? Maybe that's my problem elsewhere in my life...more on that later. Well, no more (at least not when it comes to this trip)! Tomorrow I will buy my event tickets. If I at least buy that, I'll be locked in...I'll have to go at that point.

"I was told [LisaRaye] came in, she waved. Two of the people on the patio saw her. But she didn't see Michael. Michael, then, all of a sudden appeared and started walking up the walk toward the house," Jeter recounts.

"[LisaRaye] was walking toward their library study, and Michael said, 'You should not be here. What are you doing here?' She said, What are you talking about Michael, this is my home.' They went into the library. And one of Michael's security guards grabbed First Lady's hand and snatched a recorder she had in her hand."

Jeter, who earlier stated there was no pushing during the confrontation, says one of Misick's security guards then "pushed LisaRaye and her guard out the front door of the house."

She says LisaRaye re-entered the home and ended up in the kitchen area, standing physically between Michael and his sister with the sister behind the actress and Misick in front of her. Jeter says the siblings began moving their bodies into LisaRaye's path to block her from stepping past them and into other rooms of the mansion.

"Then someone bit her on her shoulder," Jeter says. "And then she bit someone back.

Rosenwald was the long time president and chairman of Sears, Roebuck Company. Starting in 1911, his matching grant philanthropic programs helped build dozens of Young Mens Christian Association branches for African Americans.
Rosenwald promised to give a community $25,000 towards the construction of new or new Y facilities if that community could raise $75,000 on its own within 5 years.
The mid-1910s saw many new Y.M.C.A. buildings for African Americans including the Wabash Avenue Y on Chicagos South Side, the Christian Street Y in Philadelphia, and the Carlton Avenue Y in Brooklyn.
People rallied around this cause. For example, in Chicago, 10,000 black donors 25% of the African American population gave $67,000 to the Wabash Y fund.
In all, twenty-five Colored Y.M.C.A.s were built in twenty-three American cities with help from Rosenwald’s program.
These branches helped pave the way the emergence and growth of black basketball during a time when most athletic facilities were racially segregated.

The American womens water polo team had a disappointing tie with Italy on Wednesday. But the best news of the day came after China upset Russia to assure that the Americans would advance to the quarterfinals and still have an opportunity to win their group.
The United States (1-0-1) is tied with Italy atop their group after the Italian Elisa Casanova scored a power-play goal with 22 seconds remaining to tie the match, 9-9. Brittany Hayes and Brenda Villa led a balanced American scoring attack with two goals each. The American women struggled early, though, as they trailed by 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
This game we had more balance in the number of players scoring, United States Coach Guy Baker said. We had seven players score nine goals. Overall, I thought we played well. After the first quarter we played well enough to win.
The American woman, who are ranked No. 1 in the world, play No. 3 Russia on Friday in a game that will leave the disappointed Russians with little motivation. They were picked by some to win gold in these Olympics. But after losses to Italy and China, Russia will not advance. Baker said that will not change the United States approach.
m sure they are going to come to play, while it is great for China to defeat them, it is sad for Russia that they will not be able to move on, Baker said. m sure it will be a great game.

The 1966 Texas Western ( now known as The University of Texas at El Paso -UTEP)- Kentucky NCAA Championship Game will go down in history of the most historically significant game. Certainly the most impact game ever played in the history of basketball. Simply because of the segregated nature of basketball in the south during the sixties. This game and this game alone served to remove the barrier and unwritten rules that college coaches observed in not recruiting the black athlete. After this game, the barrier were lifted and southern school began in earnest to recruit the black athlete.
Adolph Rupp, The head basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, did not want to recruit black players. Once an assistant coach gave Rupp a list of potential recruits. He glanced down the list and saw a 7 footer, Rupp said of course I want the seven footer, His assistant coach mention off handedly that the seven footer was ‘Colored” Rupp responded by saving “Why don’t they ever put asterisk by their names so I will know who they are. Rupp went to great lengths not to recruit black basketball players.
Adolph Rupp won 4 national Championships at Kentucky during his career. He wanted to win just one more championship before he retired and 1966, he felt this was his year to do it. Rupp had a team, featuring five undersized players, led by Pat Riley, current Miami heat Coach, Louie Dampier, Tommy Kron, Thad Jarez and Larry Conley. They were known as Rupp Runts and they terrorized the Southeastern Conference.
Texas Western had one of the best point guards ever in Bobby Joe Hill from Detroit. Haskins recruited five black players and he promoted that he would flaunt it doing warm ups. He would encourage his players to dunk to create intimidation. Haskins was a con-man, and a pool shark, he transferred those characteristic to the basketball floor.
A white basketball player on Texas Western team, said he grew up hating opposing white players, because of the despicable things that they said to the Texas Western’s black players. Pat Forde, a Reporter for the Louisville Courier Journal, said they brought a street game with them. It started with Don Haskins Texas Western team.
Kentucky won a number one ranking by beating nearly everyone, with a unrelenting defense and fast break offense, Rupp’ s team was a well oiled team. Texas Western survived Kansas by one point in Double overtime. The other semifinal game over shadowed the Texas Western-Kansas Game. The general consensus was that they Kentucky - Duke winner would be the National champion. Texas Western was furious. They wanted to beat Kentucky not because they had the possibility of being the first all black team. They wanted to beat them because they were being overlooked.
Kentucky Rupp’s said “there is no way five black players can beat my five players”. Except Rupp used the ‘N” word. Haskins then made a crucial strategic decision prior to the game. He played three guards to keep up with Kentuckys speed. There was a buzz in the stands. It was a Kentucky crowd in the stands, Confederate flags, waving back and forth. The Kentucky band played Dixie.
Haskins, rolled out five black player to start the NCAA championship Game. Just understand there was an unwritten rule by white college basketball coaches in the south; never start five black players at one time. Haskins did it. It was on. One undefeated team in Kentucky and one once defeated team in Texas Western. Haskins was a gambler and he would do anything possible to win the gamble; beat the racist coach, Adolph Rupp. Haskins did, more in this one game to further the cause of integration than Martin Luther King. This game was the defining game of the Century for College basketball.
It had tremendous social implications. I remember seeing the game myself . I was only 11 years old, but this game is sealed in my memory as the most exciting and significant game ever in NCAA finals history. There was the notion that if you had five black players that they were not as intelligent as the white players. If you put pressure on them they would crack. Texas Western proved this to be unfounded.
At the start of the game Big Daddy Latin rejected Pat Riley shot and the next time he dunked over Pat Riley Head. Later, point guard, Bobby Joe Hill made two consecutive steals in the game. Kentucky was down 34-31 at the half. Rupp sis alleged to have said to one big man in the locker room to get out on that “Coon. The general consensus was that if we can keep it close then we can beat them. Kentucky kept it close they felt they could win. Texas Western won the NCAA Championship 74-65.
Kentucky felt the lost to Texas Western was comparable to a death. The Texas Western players, as always took it in stride, Haskins hoped his players would be a little excited about the win. Coach Haskins Smiled. Coach Rupp was unable to say anything. Losing to five blacks stunned him. He later referred to Texas Western College as Two White Coaches. He reacted in a small way and Rupp kept the mantra of racism, because he could not acknowledge that an all black team actually beat him.
Don Haskins begin to realized the impact of the victory. He would later received basketball cans filled with hate mail for coaching all black players. He even received letter from black leaders who called him an exploiter. Haskins, a white coach, paid a price for his courage. But if it were not for his courage, college basketball would not be where it is today. Adolph Rupp fought the memory of that game for the rest of his life. Rupp’s world would never be the same. he never accepted the lost. Haskins impact in College Basketball would go down a significant.
In a time when our country was in turmoil, fighting for equality for blacks in the south The Texas Western- Kentucky NCAA championship played a significant role in breaking the chains of integration. After this game, White southern Collegiate Basketball Coaches started recruiting the black athlete, one by one the ban was lifted. Adolph Rupp coached five more years before his retirement. Finally recruiting his first black player, Tom Payne, in 1969. Rupp died of cancer in 1977. In 1998 Kentucky won the National Championship, ironically, a black coach, Tubby Smith.

ESPN reported this past week from St. Louis and the story was not the Cardinals or the Rams or the Blues, but the annual basketball game between the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Concordia Seminary.
There is the college basketball we've sort of heard of: the Division II and III schools, where scholarship money is scarce or nonexistent and the only charter comes with four wheels, a driver and a highway. Beyond that, way off in the corner, where a spotlight couldn't find them with the help of Dora the Explorer, are schools that no one would even expect to have a basketball team, much less one with any sort of legitimacy.I mean, really, would you expect future pharmacists to travel the roads of rural Kentucky in search of conference hoops games?
Better yet, would you expect the druggists to go head-to-head with pastors-in-training?
(Right. Steroids versus God. They've heard that one.)
One thing we haven't heard is a national story about these two teams as good as this one. You really have to read the whole thing.
For Lutherans reading, this is a satisfying line from the story: In St. Louis, the city's College of Pharmacy and Concordia Seminary have had a standing date for years. Better yet, Concordia and its partnering seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind., have an equally long-standing rivalry -- this despite the fact that Fort Wayne hasn't beaten Concordia in 24 years.
For anyone looking ahead to the coming basketball season, tickets are still available for the College of Pharmacy-Concordia Seminary game which will be played, as always, in the historic Peterson Field House.

There is nothing more embarrassing to a basketball coach than to spend an entire game attacking a man-for-man defense - then learn the opponents used a zone. Those coaches who have been in the game for any length of time will probably recall just such an affair. The object of concealing the defense is to confuse the opponents so they will attack with the least appropriate offense.

When we graduate high school, we think we have to have our entire life mapped out. I was going to be an accountant when I started my senior year. By the time I graduated, I had met Cliff but I was still going to college. When college started that August, guess who wasn't there? Me! I chose to get married the follwing November. That was God's course for my life. And the life I live today is not the life I thought I'd be living back in the day when I was young, idealistic, and had little to no life experience.
The trajectory of Amy's life has changed in just a matter of weeks. But unlike the #88 car, this isn't going to end her race...it's just the beginning! She's experienced deep hurt in that place that you only know exists when you open yourself up to love and get hurt by it. I'm so proud of her. She is exhibiting strength and wisdom and looking to God for peace and answers. I don't know if God has given her answers yet, but I do know that she is experiencing her first taste of God's amazing grace and she's found it to be sweet and pleasant. As her mom, I'd love to shield her from hurt but I cannot. How else would she be able to find and see God without it? These are hard, tough times but they are precious times. Years from now, she will look back on these days where she first saw God's grace that is "sufficient to meet all our needs.

THREE freaking players with numbers next to their name... that because the rest of the 08/09 Basketball team hasn't even set foot on campus yet... IU has had to enter their recruits into the roster to make it appear less embarrassing than it really is. Only 2 players in the entire program have played NCAA basketball before.

Oh by the way.. there are at least rumblings that Crawford might be gone soon too.. (purely speculation and unverifiable)

IU's lineup for next year includes ONE FREAKING PLAYER over 6'8"... 7 footer Tijan Jobe who averaged a massive 4 pts / 4 rebounds playing for OLNEY CENTRAL COLLEGE... (also, as a sidenote, NJCAA.org has his stats listed at 3 pts/game and 3.074 rebounds/game... but hey, IU needs to inflate their spirits somehow)

The funny thing is, the second Crean was even rumored to be going to IU, Hoosier fans were already starting to pat themselves on the back and brag about how "everything is going to be just fine"...

well, it might be, but its gonna be a few years... and until then, they better just learn to deal with the ridicule and chorus of laughter coming from the rest of the college basketball world, because Indiana is truly the laughingstock of NCAA hoops these days.... and the NCAA hearings have yet to come...

...although it should be noted: is there really anything left of the IU program for the NCAA smash up this summer? The NCAA could take away 5 scholarships and STILL not make IU shuffle its roster.

Don't expect much from the NCAA... there isn't anything they could possibly do to IU that their own hubris hasn't done to themselves.

My hope is that good kids like Matt Roth and Verdell Jones don't have IU fans turn on them... because given the way the "saviour of Indiana Basketball" Eric Gordon left Bloomington, I shudder to think what will happen when the IU fans don't realize their current situation is their own damn fault and turn on kids who are left after the Spring Crean-ing in Bloomington.

Single Shot Electronic Basketball Game

cepplett@grandhaventribune.com

I played against professional athletes I grew up idolizing and signed autographs for kids who had no idea who I was.
And it was all for charity.
Playing as a member of the Media All-Star team last Friday in a charity basketball game at East Kentwood High School was almost surreal.
The crowd was highly entertained, but so were the players, as the Media All-Stars faced off against six past and present Detroit Lions.
I have to admit that after signing up to play on the media team, I was a little scared. The Detroit Lions may stink on the football field, but they're still big guys. They're also athletes and I'm not. You'd be scared, too.
But I simply reminded myself that it was for charity, a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club. Fortunately, after arriving for the game, I found out the Lions had the same attitude.
Lions player-coach Rob Rubick told us we'd make the game fun, not physical. You see, I thought I might actually have to practice for this game and make sure I was in good shape. Fortunately, just prior to tip-off, I realized the media team was playing the Washington Generals to the Lions' Harlem Globetrotters.
Yeah, I didn't think it'd be a full-speed pick-up game, but I thought it might get physical from time to time. Not so much. We were more involved with keeping things entertaining and getting the kids involved.
Rubick told us that it was all about the kids. Honestly, this was apparent throughout the game. And I think it's why the crowd seemed to so genuinely enjoy the entire event the kids were the stars.
Sure, there was high jinks involving the radio personalities from WGRD-FM's "The Free Beer Hot Wings Show," and I even got in a buzzer-beater shot at the end of the first half, but everyone there was more interested in cheering on the kids at the free throw line.
Throughout the game, the Lions pulled kids from the stands to shoot free throws, and a lucky few even got to play for a stretch.
One girl, about 9 or 10 years old, was flying up and down the court, schooling everyone on my team.
Watching the kids have so much fun brought a smile to my face, but I'm sure the one on theirs was even bigger.
The Kiwanis Club is focused on children, and that was certainly apparent during Friday's event. The nonprofit organization's motto is "Serving the Children of the World." Kiwanis focuses on human and spiritual formation of children, looking at the Golden Rule as a source of encouragement for building relationships.
In my mind, the focus on children made the night a huge success. When I talked to the organizer afterward, he said they'd hoped for a larger crowd.
It's often easy to look at numbers when you're organizing such a large event, but the focus should have been on quality. Ultimately, everyone who played and the crowd that cheered made a lasting impact in those children's lives. Truly, that was the intention in making the event happen. And by that measure, it was a huge success.
I forget most of the details of the game. I'm not sure if anyone kept track of stats or if there's a box score somewhere.
I remember a few personal highlights. Aside from tackling Griff the Grand Rapids Griffins mascot I made a few baskets and played against a couple of my all-time favorite Lions, Cory Schlesinger and Luther Ellis. Ellis and Schlesinger were joined by Lions Alex Lewis and Casey FitzSimmons. Former Lion Ron Bellamy, now with the Miami Dolphins, rounded out their roster.
Now, I forget the game's final score, but we all know the Globetrotters always win. And so did the kids.
