Fantasy Man's 2008 Closer Report
Team by Team - Updated Weekly
Last Updated: August 14th, 2008

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore: George Sherrill has been great for the Orioles all season but struggling as of late. For now, Sherrill is a solid #2 closer in mixed leagues.

Boston: Jon Papelbon is the obvious closer. Justin Masterson is your listed set up man and potential save vulture. Hideki Okajima shouldn't be counted on.

Chicago: Bobby Jenks is the unquestioned closer and should make a bid at 40+ in 2008. He has an occasional mishap giving up a run or two but he can blow guys away while learning to keep his WHIP down. Octavio Dotel seems to be the primary set up man and save vulture.

Cleveland: Closer-by-Committee with Rafael Perez and Mashide Kobayashi. If you asked me, I'd say Perez get more of the opportunities from here on out as he has been most dominant of anyone on that staff. Don't be surprised if Rafael Betancourt gets hot and takes another shot at it as well.

Detroit: Todd Jones is out, Fernando Rodney is in! Joel Zumaya lurks in the back ground but is on the DL again.

Kansas City: Joakim Soria has been as good as advertised so far this season but the Royals stink. The Mexicutioner has entrenched himself as a top 10 closer.

Los Angeles: Francisco Rodriguez is a RockStar! Scot Shields is the primary set-up man and vultures saves when he needs to. Rodriguez is a worker but Shields is the top dog for holds, ERA, WHIP K's as a reliever. Dark horse to close is Jose Arredondo who could eventually take K-Rod's spot if he decides to test the free agent market.

Minnesosta: Joe Nathan is obviously as solid as they come and is off to a good start. Jesse Crain is currently the back up/setup role candidate as Pat Neshek is on the DL.

New York: Mariano Rivera has been fantastic so far this season. Dark Horse for holds/saves in a sticky situation is Jose Veras or even DeMaso Marte.

Oakland: Huston Street has been struggling mightily and it looks as if Brad Zeigler may get some chances to close as Street tries to straighten himself out!

Seattle: J.J. Putz and Brandon Morrow will most likely share the closer duties. Stash Morrow as he is on the DL but has some real talent. Putz has been super shaky this year.

Tampa Bay: Troy Percival is back from the DL. Grant Balfour is the set up and emergency closer. The Dark Horse potential is 6'9" monster Jeff Neimann if they can make room for him or the Rays may even call up Prospect David Price to help in the bullpen. Just someone to keep an eye on or even stash on your bench.

Texas: C.J. Wilson is now out for the rest of the season with an injury! Eddie Guardado takes over as closer. He doesn't get many K's but he should be decent. Joaquin Benoit and Frank Francisco are dark horses to close if Guardado falters.

Toronto: B.J. Ryan is solid. Scott Downs is the #2 with Jeremy Accardo on the DL.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Arizona: Brandon Lyon is your closer but the acquisition of Jon Rauch has some Lyon owners worried. I think Lyon holds onto the job but Rauch is a good gut to have stashed just in case.

Atlanta: What did I tell you about Gonzalez! Looks like Gonzalez is the permanent closer! I'd say this lasts all year assuming these guys stay healthy. It just seems like Rafael Soriano is a life-long set up man!

Chicago: Kerry Wood back, Marmol in set up role!.

Cincinnati: Francisco Cordero is entrenched as the primary closer and he's been decent, but Cincinnati overall has struggled. A dark horse to close.... 26 yrs. old, 6'5", 230lb, Jared Burton, someone to keep an eye on .

Colorado: Brian Fuentes is the closer but trade talks linger. Taylor Bucholz is the primary setup man and would take over if Fuentes is traded. Keep an eye on Bulcholz, he'll vulture a few saves and could take over if Fuentes stumbles. Bucholz a good guy to stash.

Florida: Kevin Gregg is currently listed as closer and I have to assume he'll stay there for now as he's been decent. Joe Nelson, Matt Lindstrom and Renyel Pinto could be in the mix as well.

Houston: Jose Valverde is entrenched even though he's struggled a bit!

Los Angeles: Takashi Saito is on the DL with arm problems and could be out the rest of the year, so HELLO Jonathon Broxton! Simple as this.....Broxton is a Joba/Papelbon type of pitcher, so good luck with that!

Milwaukee: Saloman Torres is now the closer in Milwaukee. We all know he is an innings eater in the bullpen and has done a decent job, but he's certainly not the answer. Gagne is out, Turnbow is gone, and Riske can't get it done. Next in line is Guillermo Mota and he's just as bad! A Dark Horse candidate mentioned would be Dave Bush, who was a closer in college. He's been "half" terrible as a starter so maybe this could be his calling if and when Torres craps the bed.

New York: Billy Wagner is entrenched but is on the DL with forearm soreness. As far as the setup role, it will most likely will remain with Duaner Sanchez or Aaon Heilman. The Mets bullpen is a laughingstock so I wouldn't trust anyone but Wagner, and even him I'd be a bit leary. If available, grab and stash prospect Eddie Kunz who saved 27 games in Double A Binghamton this season and has been called up to take the roster spot of Wagner while he's out.

Philadelphia: Brad Lidge is the Philly closer and has been fantastic but he's been out recently with a stiff right shoulder. Ryan Madson seems to be the guy getting the nod in Lidge's place.

Pittsburgh: Matt Capps on the DL, DeMaso Marte gone to the Yankees, and there really nothing left but scraps. Looks like John Grabow gets the nod but not sure how effective he can be. Stay away from this situation for now. Tyler Yates is poop-on-a-stick fantasy wise.

San Diego: Trevor Hoffman has been shaky but but he's still valuable and will rack up saves! Padres GM Kevin Towers has said that he sees Heath Bell as the heir apparent to Hoffman's throne.

San Francisco: Brian Wilson has been pretty decent, shaky at times, stellar at other times. Surprisingly the Giants have been getting Wilson opportunities thanks to great pitching from everyone but Barry Zito. Giants pitchers will continue pitching well, so Wilson should continue to rack up saves at a National League leading pace.

St. Louis: Jason Isringhausen is back in the mix with Ryan Franklin pitching poorly. However, with Izzy being a less than stellar option, the Cards could opt to make Adam Wainwright the closer when he returns from the DL. Chris Perez has been getting a few saves as of late as well!

Washington: Joel Hanrahan? Yuck. Chad Cordero is out for the season!

Dan Rootenberg is a seasoned businessman. He runs a well-regarded physical therapy practice in NYC and makes a good living. It's not anyone who can throw down $25K in a fledgling baseball league, right?

Dan also loves baseball and has been immersed in it for years. He is one of many that would like to see pro ball take hold in Israel. He may be one of the few in that group that can actually contribute to making it happen.

There are questions out there though that are still unanswered. Some have been posed on this blog about who else besides players are being paid.

Paying some of the players is a good start. Understandably, Dan has a strong allegiance to the players having been one of them. Yet, one might well wonder how it was determined which players get paid first...the ones Dan wants to come back (apparently that is a qualification based on the latest Elli post)? the ones who are owed the most (some were owed $500, others supposedly as much as $1500, maybe even $2000 for the full summer fo 2007)? What about the managers? Some time ago, it was noted that at least 2 of the managers were owed a lot of money. Have they been paid? And all the vendors? The overall number was reportedly over $1 million. That leads to other questions.

Like, what about the financials from last year. For Dan to accept the reins of this enterprise and for him to be able to engage new vendors, one would think that the accurate financial statements for last year now exist and were prepared by a certified, licensed financial professional of unquestionable reputation; as well, it would make sense that a statement about new funding would have to be in place. After all, he has now reportedly sent out a bunch of checks to players. So, what about the source of the funding for the venture Dan is looking to head up this summer. Who are the new investors? Were they vetted and, if so how? Are the rumored investor problems that have appeared accurate or a nasty rumor? What's up with Solomont? Is he another Larry Baras? Do birds of a feather...? With all the distrust flowing from last year's experience, why not firmly dispell the rumor if the latter is true?

And who are the new vendors? Have they been paid even before the debts were paid to the 2007 vendors, without whom last year might not have happened. And if the financials for 2007 have been done, why haven't they been summarized for the public to create a better sense of trust going forward. Even more importantly, why is it that original investors have not received any financials yet although they were entitled to them in early April.

Then there is the decertification by the IAB for the IBL's breach of contract, as stated in the IAB's letter that made it's way to the public. Where is a joint statement from the IBL and the IAB that they've ironed out their differences, if in fact they have done so?

It would be great to see a full press release providing meaningful answers to these questions and would go a long way towards creating a broader base of trust based on a transparency that was non-existent with the 2007 leadership (when their attempts at transparency later proved to either shade the truth or simply be false).

Lastly, here, word is getting around that the documentary Holyland Hardball is stirring up (significant?) interest in new investors, perhaps with the assistance of this Boston-based investment firm Elli heard about. However, the video, while apparently very well done, only documents the creation of the IBL through its opening day. It does not address the major league problems of last summer's then brand new league...from the lack of a the IBL website-reported "marquis"playing field at Sportek Park upon our arrival and it's hasty, sub-par construction to the sub-par room and board to the near work stoppage in mid-July (which would have been the end of the IBL only shortly after it started) to the broader financial problems that almost led to the travel agent pulling the return flight tickets of league players and personnel and did lead to bounced checks (that have reportedly had serious impact on some league participants) and unpaid debts of over a million dollars.

Which begs the question, what broader disclosure about the inaugural/only season is being made to the prospective investors who are being lured in with the Holyland Hardball film? What promises, if any, are being made and what is truly behind those promises that will ensure that they can be kept. Or, are the people who were more prominent last year but seem to be almost publicly invisible right now up to what some, and perhaps many, would say are the same questionable business practices?

This is pointedly not a suggestion that Dan Rootenberg would be involved in this type of behavior; rather, it is a question of what information does he have about how the now silent leadership behind the scenes is going about their business. Remember that Mr. Baras' investment firm quit on him last winter after they discovered he'd been less than honest with them, having failed to mention to them his being sued for securities fraud in Boston Federal Court.

All of these are very valid questions given the debacle that was year one. No doubt the players made the league the success that it was. And no doubt, the founder and his close allies quickly ran that success into the ground.

Baseball is a magical sport. It is intoxicating to player and fan alike. Find a bunch of like-minded people with some bats, gloves and a ball, a large grassy area and a baseball game can break out almost anywhere.

But a professional baseball league is a whole different world. And speaking of worlds, doing business in Israel is a far different world in many ways than doing business in other places. Everyone I know wants a professional league to take hold and grow in Israel. That means making the Israelis fans, making the Israel vendors happy and really selling the game to the local population. It means having a meaningful PR and advertising strategy. It means having a field development plan. It means connecting with a feeder system of talent that will build the talent level and status of the league in the baseball world.

All the power to Dan if he has a real plan for getting pro baseball to stick in Israel. One wonders whether a three week long tournament, some clinics and playing catch, without much more on the league's part, can accomplish that goal. It would seem to be appropriate to hear some more from him (and, perhaps, the others in the current IBL hierarchy) about his/their plan of action, particularly given the unfortunate prior history of the IBL. Hey, if it sounds good and has some teeth to it, it might well interest investors he never knew had in interest in funding this attempt at reincarnating the original venture.

Ball's in your glove, Dan. Talk to us.

Women in Baseball: Lucy Calautti

  • May. 7th, 2008 at 11:20 AM
casino, poker, online casino, online gambling, online poker

After the bill is drafted and has achieved support from key members, Calautti helps to grind out the bill and persuade members of both the House and the Senate to get the legislation passed.  Like most lobbyists, she often hosts fundraisers for members of Congress to help them raise money for campaigns as well.

Of course, as we all know, there are times when Congress approaches Major League Baseball directly about issues.  For the past several years, Congress has taken an increased role in investigating steroid allegations.  During those times, Calautti has found herself explaining “to Congress and the Administration baseball’s position…on issues that we don’t necessary want Congress to fix but that Congress has decided they want to be involved in.” Part of her duties will require continued “work with Congress to oppose the legalization of any kinds of drugs or so called dietary supplements that metabolize in the body as steroids.”
As Major League Baseball’s advocate on Capitol Hill, she also has the opportunity to introduce people in the political world to baseball, a task which admittedly is her favorite part of the job.  “I love when members of Congress want to sit down and talk baseball and ask me, So, what do you think?  Are the Tigers going to be in first place this year? Is their pitching going to be as good as Cleveland’s? I love that members of Congress and other people in the world of politics and policy see me as a way to express their love of the game.”
But Lucy has another special task.  Every year, she introduces baseball players to the world of politics.  Calautti brings Major League Baseball’s 150-180 rookies to Washington for a civics lesson every summer.  She takes them to the floor of the Senate, the floor of the House and to the White House.  They also dine with her in the Capitol.
Of course, Lucy’s dream job hasn’t come without challenges.  Throughout her whole life, Calautti has taken positions that had been ordinarily or previously been filled by men.  Starting with the Navy and throughout her twenty year career in government and politics, she was a trailblazer for other women.  Baseball, Calautti says, was not a huge reach for her personally but expectantly, she encountered additional challenges in the industry.

Proverbial Baseball

"My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For the length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man." Proverbs 3:1-4

Well Brothers it's little league baseball season. As a father it means getting to watch my son play and compete in one of America's pastimes but as his team's coach it means teaching skills that could last a lifetime. I spend some of that coaching time on character and sportsmanship and I pray that I am planting seed.

One of the things I notice being a coach are parents....especially the fathers. I have one player who does a good job of disrespecting his father. There are outward insults that go back and forth between these two. One day this same father looks to me and say's "This is what happens when you spare the rod, right!?" Of course my reply is "Yes, exactly."

I was recently blessed and privileged to watch my 12 year old son be accepted into the Junior National Honor Society. An achievement I never sought after. When I was his age I had already decided on a path of sin.
