Falls Creek for a full week of fun in the snow. Id never been skiing before and at the start of the week I was struggling to even stand up but by the end I attempted (and conquered) my first black run! Id forgotten how much fun it can be to learn a new skill and Ill definitely be back next season, its a great way to spend some time away.  When youre up at the top of the mountain its like youre in another world (this is best illustrated by the fact a bowl of hot chips at the top of the main chair lift costs an offensive AUD$12.50) and its great to just disconnect from the rest of the world and relax.
Thats not to say I didnt play a little poker, on the Monday night we were up there the Australian Poker League was running one of their tournaments at one of the local pubs called The Frying Pan Inn. To be honest going in I was more interested in having a few beers than playing a pub freeroll tournament but as the pints flowed I started chatting and joking with the other players at my table and had a great time and after I made the first break I decided to actually try and go deep in the thing.
And go deep I did, managing 6th overall in what was pretty much a crapshoot of a final table given the fast structure of these things. Great fun though.
Highlight:
Requesting one more beer at the start of the final table only to be challenged by my g/f to double up and then you can have one. I proceed to get dealt pocket 10s the first hand and do just that. Mines a Coopers Sparkling Ale thanks!
Lowlight:
Going out in 6th with the blinds at 10,000/20,000 and a stack of around 80,000 I open and push wth ATo trying to get heads up with the blinds who desperately short. The big stack on the button (who, how can I put it nicely? Lets say hes been getting quite lucky) calls with 64o and Im out when he spikes his 6 on the river.
As always though, I thanked the tourney organisers and shook my opponents hand before heading out into the snow for the walk home. Was a fun night, and an even better week. Kinda sucks to be back home.

REVIEW-Olympics-For sponsors, Games were money well spent

BEIJING, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Sponsors of the Beijing Olympics have spent hundreds of millions of dollars for 16 days in the spotlight and they reckon it was money well spent to get a foothold in the huge Chinese market.
Sponsorship money is a big part of the Olympics, estimated to account for a third of its revenues from 2001 to 2004, but the 60 or so sponsors for Beijing were focused as much on host nation China as the Games themselves.
Chinese consumers recognition of companies backing the Olympics has surged, initial surveys show. They are also more willing to buy the products of companies which have supported an event so keenly anticipated in China.
It has been a great success, especially as there have been no major casualties, said Gyehyun Kwon, head of sports marketing at Samsung Electronics, one of 12 global sponsors paying an average of $72 million for the rights to the Beijing and 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
Despite protests along the route of the Olympic torch relay and calls by human rights groups for companies to boycott Beijing, the Aug 8-24 Games ran smoothly, to sponsors relief.
The global attention has been fantastic, television ratings around the world at record levels, and the athletes made history, said Michael Lynch, head of global sponsorship at Visa, another of the 12.
Other global sponsors like Coca-Cola and McDonalds twinned their Olympic marketing campaigns with Chinese athletes winning gold to tap into a wave of patriotism running through China and its 1.3 billion population.
This focus on China comes as the Communist nation emerges as a global economic superpower, desperate to show its modern face. Chinas importance is amplified by the slowdown hitting more well established economic powers.
As well as wooing Chinese consumers, companies have jumped at the chance to build goodwill with some of their most important clients in the worldthe resource-hungry Chinese government and its companies.
For example Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd was a sponsor with no consumer brand but with a need to maintain good relations with its biggest customer, China.
BATTLE OF THE RINGS
Coca-Cola, which is locked into funding the Olympics until 2020, said its sales always saw a short-term boost in any Games.
But longer term we are looking at growing our position in China which is our fourth largest market and this means increasing brand awareness, said spokesman Petro Kacur.
CSM Media Research has measured the reaction of Chinese consumers to Olympic companies since 2006. It found that Coca-Cola had overtaken local dairy company Yili, one of about 30 local sponsors, as the most effectively-marketed Olympic brand.
CSM Business Development Director Matthew Brosenne said a litmus test of sponsorship success was purchasing intent. CSM found 70 percent of Chinese consumers said they would purchase products from companies they knew were part of the Olympics.
I would definitely say the Beijing Games were a success for sponsors as there is a tremendous amount of recognition around the companies involved, he told Reuters.
It is hard for companies to quantify the return from sponsorship but all expressed relief that the International Olympic Committee and Beijing cracked down on ambush marketing.
Samsung said it has its own customised system which can give detailed numbers on how the Games boosted its brand.
We have a very clear target for our presence at the Beijing Olympics and we want to see a 10 percent improvement for brand enhancement in China, said Kwon.
So far from interim reports and our sales figures the Beijing Olympics has been a great success.
Neither sponsors nor marketing experts expected weakening global economics to deter companies from backing the Olympics. Many sponsors are locked in for the long haul anyway.
But marketing experts said sponsors would need to financially justify their involvement and ensure the Games are relevant to their brand.
Two global sponsors, Kodak and Lenovo, have already announced they will not be funding the 2012 London Olympics as they want to focus their marketing efforts elsewhere and two moreJohnson Johnson and Manulifeare yet to recommit.
Sports agent Evan Morgenstein of Premier Management Group, whose athletes get corporate funding, said it was hard for sponsors to get value out of the Olympics but the lure was irresistibleif it was a fit with the brand.
But just buying the rings is not good enough. They need to buy the rings and then spend about twice that amount again to aggregate it that is where the value comes in, he told Reuters.

As a full time online tournament poker player, I am always open to new concepts, strategies and opinions. Hence, when I picked up this book, written by Lee Nelson and Blair Rodman, I was immediately convinced of some fresh new material here. Now whether or not you agree with the strategies presented in this poker book, it?s a necessity to be aware of your competitor?s knowledge and recognize their strategies as well. Some of which clearly will be derived from books like this in the years to come.
Nelson and Rodman are pros at this game and each has an excellent record of success. In this book, they bring to the novice player a straightforward strategy to implement in No Limit Hold?em Tournaments. Having used these strategies themselves, well, they know of what they write. The premise of the Kill Phil strategy is twofold. 1- Take full advantage of betting your whole stack (it is No Limit after all) consistently, thus masking the true strength of your hand, and 2- Negate post-flop play which is generally the domain of stronger players.
The reasoning here is, that each time you are all in, and a presumed favorite, your potential to build a huge stack is very realistic. In addition, even if you go all-in with the prescribed hands and find yourself behind, you won?t be that much of an underdog. The book shows in detail how certain hands which you wouldn?t think to go all in with, stand good odds to take down a huge pot.
The Kill Phil Strategy is essentially a by-product of how tournament formats are traditionally structured. This strategy was first introduced in David Sklanksy?s Tournament Poker for Advanced Players, but Nelson and Rodman break it down and make adjustments for stack sizes and position, while also introducing some advanced concepts, which the novice tournament player can introduce into his game with some experience.
The writers do an excellent job of explaining this poker tournament strategy, giving confidence to any new poker tournament player. As a seasoned individual I did find some flaws in the system, that do not take away from the writing and the generous amount of background tournament information included here. Personally I could not use this formula, because a large part of my game is post flop aggression. As well, if you employ theses tactics in a low entry fee online tournament, well let?s say you?ll get laughed out of Dodge. I have seen such characters and they NEVER win online. Players like myself line up drooling for just the right moment to take these chumps down.
But as I mentioned earlier, being keen to new concepts is part of growing and improving as player. The writers introduce an excellent short stack strategy that can be incorporated into most players? games, and that I am fond of using. Hey, whenever you get two players this good, clunking heads, odds, and strategies together, give them the 25 bucks and read their book.

Bryan Verreault has also been named associate coach.
Bryan is a tremendous coach and in his new role as Associate Coach, he will take on more duties behind the bench. Bryan has proven that he is a competitor and has a strong knowledge of hockey and he will be expected to contribute more of that knowledge and passion for the game to our players.

Desperation conference is over. We are heading down to New Orleans. I would like to reflect on the conference for a moment
When we arrived at the conference and saw the bright lights and the loud worship and people jumping up and down, we were all a little cynical. Ive had experiences like this before, but Ive had poor relationships with people who worship like that that it hurt my view on the motives of these worshippers. However, as the conference went on and the more we worship like that, the cynicism went away, and our hearts were fully engaged (I mean, these people do love God!).
After the cyncism left, we all agreed that the conference was one of the best things we did all year. We questioned our relationships with God and our loyalty to him. God revealed what he wants from our lives, and we are grateful for his presence. And we worshipped like we never had before. It was truly awesome!
Oh, and we worshipped with Leeland (!) and Desperation Band. Go on iTunes and check them out. Both are excellent. One moment in particular we all were moved by: Leeland was leading us, and they were expressing how in the story of Jericho the Jews took the city just by shouting and praising God! And they led us into a part of a song where we all just praised God with our voices rising at the top of our lungs shouting together- they may not have been a better moment worshipping together than that - thousands of students who love Jesus worshipping him like at the walls of Jerichowow! Young people worshipping God - nothing better!
Oh wait! There was another moment. Each student was challenged to fill out a piece of posterboard which challenged them about what they are counting on God to do in their lives, school, church. And they signed the posterboard and to hold them in the air above their heads stating that they were committed to following God wherever he calls them - it was awesome.
