AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore: George Sherrill has been great for the Orioles all season but struggling as of late. For now, Sherrill is a solid #2 closer in mixed leagues.

Boston: Jon Papelbon is the obvious closer. Justin Masterson is your listed set up man and potential save vulture. Hideki Okajima shouldn't be counted on.

Chicago: Bobby Jenks is the unquestioned closer and should make a bid at 40+ in 2008. He has an occasional mishap giving up a run or two but he can blow guys away while learning to keep his WHIP down. Octavio Dotel seems to be the primary set up man and save vulture.

Cleveland: Closer-by-Committee with Rafael Perez and Mashide Kobayashi. If you asked me, I'd say Perez get more of the opportunities from here on out as he has been most dominant of anyone on that staff. Don't be surprised if Rafael Betancourt gets hot and takes another shot at it as well.

Detroit: Todd Jones is out, Fernando Rodney is in! Joel Zumaya lurks in the back ground but is on the DL again.

Kansas City: Joakim Soria has been as good as advertised so far this season but the Royals stink. The Mexicutioner has entrenched himself as a top 10 closer.

Los Angeles: Francisco Rodriguez is a RockStar! Scot Shields is the primary set-up man and vultures saves when he needs to. Rodriguez is a worker but Shields is the top dog for holds, ERA, WHIP K's as a reliever. Dark horse to close is Jose Arredondo who could eventually take K-Rod's spot if he decides to test the free agent market.

Minnesosta: Joe Nathan is obviously as solid as they come and is off to a good start. Jesse Crain is currently the back up/setup role candidate as Pat Neshek is on the DL.

New York: Mariano Rivera has been fantastic so far this season. Dark Horse for holds/saves in a sticky situation is Jose Veras or even DeMaso Marte.

Oakland: Huston Street has been struggling mightily and it looks as if Brad Zeigler may get some chances to close as Street tries to straighten himself out!

Seattle: J.J. Putz and Brandon Morrow will most likely share the closer duties. Stash Morrow as he is on the DL but has some real talent. Putz has been super shaky this year.

Tampa Bay: Troy Percival is back from the DL. Grant Balfour is the set up and emergency closer. The Dark Horse potential is 6'9" monster Jeff Neimann if they can make room for him or the Rays may even call up Prospect David Price to help in the bullpen. Just someone to keep an eye on or even stash on your bench.

Texas: C.J. Wilson is now out for the rest of the season with an injury! Eddie Guardado takes over as closer. He doesn't get many K's but he should be decent. Joaquin Benoit and Frank Francisco are dark horses to close if Guardado falters.

Toronto: B.J. Ryan is solid. Scott Downs is the #2 with Jeremy Accardo on the DL.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Arizona: Brandon Lyon is your closer but the acquisition of Jon Rauch has some Lyon owners worried. I think Lyon holds onto the job but Rauch is a good gut to have stashed just in case.

Atlanta: What did I tell you about Gonzalez! Looks like Gonzalez is the permanent closer! I'd say this lasts all year assuming these guys stay healthy. It just seems like Rafael Soriano is a life-long set up man!

Chicago: Kerry Wood back, Marmol in set up role!.

Cincinnati: Francisco Cordero is entrenched as the primary closer and he's been decent, but Cincinnati overall has struggled. A dark horse to close.... 26 yrs. old, 6'5", 230lb, Jared Burton, someone to keep an eye on .

Colorado: Brian Fuentes is the closer but trade talks linger. Taylor Bucholz is the primary setup man and would take over if Fuentes is traded. Keep an eye on Bulcholz, he'll vulture a few saves and could take over if Fuentes stumbles. Bucholz a good guy to stash.

Florida: Kevin Gregg is currently listed as closer and I have to assume he'll stay there for now as he's been decent. Joe Nelson, Matt Lindstrom and Renyel Pinto could be in the mix as well.

Houston: Jose Valverde is entrenched even though he's struggled a bit!

Los Angeles: Takashi Saito is on the DL with arm problems and could be out the rest of the year, so HELLO Jonathon Broxton! Simple as this.....Broxton is a Joba/Papelbon type of pitcher, so good luck with that!

Milwaukee: Saloman Torres is now the closer in Milwaukee. We all know he is an innings eater in the bullpen and has done a decent job, but he's certainly not the answer. Gagne is out, Turnbow is gone, and Riske can't get it done. Next in line is Guillermo Mota and he's just as bad! A Dark Horse candidate mentioned would be Dave Bush, who was a closer in college. He's been "half" terrible as a starter so maybe this could be his calling if and when Torres craps the bed.

New York: Billy Wagner is entrenched but is on the DL with forearm soreness. As far as the setup role, it will most likely will remain with Duaner Sanchez or Aaon Heilman. The Mets bullpen is a laughingstock so I wouldn't trust anyone but Wagner, and even him I'd be a bit leary. If available, grab and stash prospect Eddie Kunz who saved 27 games in Double A Binghamton this season and has been called up to take the roster spot of Wagner while he's out.

Philadelphia: Brad Lidge is the Philly closer and has been fantastic but he's been out recently with a stiff right shoulder. Ryan Madson seems to be the guy getting the nod in Lidge's place.

Pittsburgh: Matt Capps on the DL, DeMaso Marte gone to the Yankees, and there really nothing left but scraps. Looks like John Grabow gets the nod but not sure how effective he can be. Stay away from this situation for now. Tyler Yates is poop-on-a-stick fantasy wise.

San Diego: Trevor Hoffman has been shaky but but he's still valuable and will rack up saves! Padres GM Kevin Towers has said that he sees Heath Bell as the heir apparent to Hoffman's throne.

San Francisco: Brian Wilson has been pretty decent, shaky at times, stellar at other times. Surprisingly the Giants have been getting Wilson opportunities thanks to great pitching from everyone but Barry Zito. Giants pitchers will continue pitching well, so Wilson should continue to rack up saves at a National League leading pace.

St. Louis: Jason Isringhausen is back in the mix with Ryan Franklin pitching poorly. However, with Izzy being a less than stellar option, the Cards could opt to make Adam Wainwright the closer when he returns from the DL. Chris Perez has been getting a few saves as of late as well!

Washington: Joel Hanrahan? Yuck. Chad Cordero is out for the season!

Olympic fever has certainly gripped the world, with conversations about sprints and marathons and weightlifters and Greco-Roman wrestling dominating the water cooler for the past few weeks. Beijing certainly has a range of impressive venues like the Bird's Nest and the Giant Mattress of Water. Nice work, Chinese peeps.

And Canberra, a leader in world sophistication and the envy of cities everywhere, sits back and watches.

In an attempt to bring the world "the greatest Olympic Games ever," Canberra is preparing a bid for the 2016 Games. And why not? We already have most of the facilities already set up - we're just waiting for the athletes to turn up.

With a capacity of around 35,000 (around 40-45,000 if you let the kids sit on the grass around the sidelines), Canberra Stadium (formerly Bruce Stadium) will be home of the Opening Ceremony, which will be all kinds of awesome. This intimate setting will allow drunken members of the crowd to yell abuse at the marching athletes, and also give the athletes able chance to physically assault them back without trouble. The Canberra Raiderettes will provide the entertainment with their intricate dancing and synchronised moves that tell the story of the "Macarena" and whatever shit Pink has released that year. The Olympic Flame* will be lit by 13-year old kids from the Belconnen Bus Interchange flicking cigarettes into a plastic wheelie bin.
*lighting of the flame may not happen due to extreme fire danger.

Canberra Stadium (formerly Bruce Stadium), home of the mighty, giant-killing Canberra Raiders and the over-paid, low-achieving ACT Brumbies will also be the centre of attention for the athletics leg of the Games. Spectators are warned to bring cash to the Stadium though, as there is only one ATM in the whole place. In terms of the track and field competition, I'm fairly sure there's enough space on the field for everything to be going on at the same time. If not, they can learn to share.

Anyone who's ever visited, lived in or flown over the city of Canberra will realise that each and every road has a bike-path that is predominantly bike-free, so the cycling street races have never been more awesome or scenic, as athletes will be treated to a city without the dangers of pollution or terrorist attacks, and be able to cycle up and around Telstra Tower, past Questacon and the National Library, through the "Orange Tunnel" and into the heart of the mess that they've made on Caswell Drive, before finishing on the marbled steps of Parliament House. Fucking sweet. I'd probably buy a bike if it meant I could take part. Cycling athletes are not permitted to take advantage of the buses that have the bike racks on the front of them. I'm still trying to work that shit out myself.

The cycling pursuit events can be held in the storm-water drains in various suburbs. I know there's a Velodrome already built in Fadden or something, but I'm buggered if I'm going there to watch it. I'll get stuck on Bugden Ave and won't be seen again.

Soccer - nup. Get rid of it.

Softball - already gotten rid of.

European handball - to be played at EPIC - preferably before they have Oktoberfest there, because otherwise the floors will be sticky with spilt "German" beer, vomit and possibly some blood. I love celebrating being so damn German. I would also like to introduce "schoolyard handball" into the Olympics, and have it played at any school ground in Canberra. Each match must be agreed as to whether there are "intoes" allowed, "spooks", "rolls-to-the-death" or "rolls-replay", "full played" or "full-played-forgotten", whether "waxing" is allowed, and if so, opens the game to "secret waxing". There must also be some Year 9 punks on hand to pick up tennis balls that go out of play, which they can then either peg at the fattest player on the handball court, or throw onto the roof of the main building. Athletes have the choice of dobbing the Year 9 kid to a nearby teacher, which will get the ball back, but result in being stuffed into a locker at a later date.

Equestrian - there are heaps of paddocks around, so take your pick. Equestrian must only be allowed into the Canberra Olympics if the horses get a medal as well. Note: The archery and shooting events will all be held at the same venue at the same time. Extra points to the horse who can maintain its stupid walking/dancing dressage pattern while being shot at.

Gymnastics can be held at my old school gym. Athletes must make sure they put all the mats away after they use them though, including the giant blue crash mat. And no fucking around while they do it, the teachers aren't in the mood to have to rescue some idiot gymnast from Mexico who's been buried in old, dusty mats by some Ukranian bully.

Swimming events can be held at Macquarie Pool (I refuse to call it Big Splash), but only in the three lanes they have open for laps. If you get hit by a stray tennis ball, it's your own fault. Athletes may also opt to compete whilst going down the waterslides, although causing a blockage in the slides (especially on the Family Slide) will result in penalties, and your Slide Pass wrist-band will be confiscated. Races will also be held going down the Hurricane Twins. Athletes attending the Macquarie Pool events are advised to wear sandals or thongs, as there are a lot of prickles on the grass.

The kayak and canoes and sailboats and whatnot events don't interest me, so if they still want to do them, they can head to Lake Burley Griffin or Kambah Pool or something. I don't see why they can't organise their own things - they should just sms each other and say, "'LOL man ill b @ LBG tomoz @ 10 4 a race. u in?' and the other guys can reply with, "yeh sounds gd. c u den!" or "cn we make it l8r? i hav 2 go 2 my cuzs wedding lol who gets married during olympix?" and then "howz 5?" "yeh i think dats ok. will txt u if not. LOL mite hav 2 make it da nxt day evn!" "LOL yeh".

The Marathon will be run close to my street, so I can watch from my balcony. But I'm not watching the whole thing; that shit gets boring. The course will lead them to the IGA at the bottom of my hill, where they are required to do some shopping and bring me beer and ice-cream (I'll provide a full shopping list closer to the event), and they can drop it off on my doorstep. They may also wash my car in lieu of this (water restrictions permitting).

Beach volleyball - nup. Get rid of it. We've got volleyball, just enjoy that.

Fencing will be replaced by battles of Street Fighter 2 - which can still be played at Theo's Take Away for 60c a game ($1 for double play). Athletes must decide whether to have normal salt or chicken salt during the event, and eat at least two potato scollops whilst competing.

The Athlete's Village is to be located at the University of Canberra student residences. Food to be provided by Baker Bob and Bagel Bob, with assistance from the G-Spot food wagon, 24-hour Drive-Thru McDonalds in Belconnen and cheap steak night at the Lighthouse. They can also eat at the Olympic venues, and choose to feast on traditional Australian/Canberran fare such as pies and sauce, sausage rolls and sauce, hot dogs and sauce, chips and sauce and noodles left over from the Multicultural Festival, all of which are burning on the outside and frozen in the middle. Sauce is 20c extra.

The Closing Ceremony (at Canberra Stadium [formerly Bruce Stadium], naturally) will involve a final showdown between Victor the Viking, Brumbie Jack, the pig from Hog's Breath, and the dog and cockatoo from Bate's Pet Paradise in a cage match. My money is on Victor, due to experience in the suit, but the Bate's Pet Paradise mascots have been biffing for years, and could surprise everyone.

With the crowd of athletes looking on, the Olympic Flame will be extinguished by Todd Carney in his usual manner, who will then jump into a ute and fang it out of there, taking the baton to the next delegate (hopefully they're in Goulburn, cause that's where Carney will probably go). With the smell of burnt rubber still fresh in the air, the sky will erupt in a decidedly half-arsed fireworks display, and the crowd will leave early, to "avoid the rush in the carpark." And so, as the curtain falls on Canberra 2016, the cleaners around Canberra Stadium will be the only ones there to hurry the athletes out so everyone can get home in time to watch Rove.

During the dynamic warm up we always have just 2 lines facing each other. We started the team form fit tackle starting with our players toe to toe, face to face. We want our tacklers to make contact when their toes are at the ballcarriers toes, to make sure we are not overextended and keeping the head up. Each coach of course has their 5 kids and we are requiring perfection on the fit, contact point, head placement, knee bend etc. the player is not allowed to come off the fit until the coach taps him on the head. We then back everyone off at 5 yards and do the same at a walk, then a jog. With so many first year players this extra form work was needed.
We then got our helmets on and worked competitive fumble recovery drills for everyone. We introduced our partner system during the first break and assigned partners per the book and went through the first day question/quiz. As a team we then did the 3 competitive group, close quarters tackling drills. The age 7-9 kids did splatter/mat tackling drills during this time period. Then we got into 3 slot challenge tackling for the kids that progressed successfully out of the close quarters as the younger kids progressed to the close quarters.
We split backs and line and worked the line on first and second step freezes, then we went to that freeze on the bags, then added a progression where they drive blocked the dummy. We also reviewed our base blocking rule (helmets off) and set up dads across from the offensive line and quizzed them on the rule and their progression. They did very well with that one. Shawn Elliott and Robert Ashley say: Thrusting a narrative onto any game at all is like trying to tell a story with a minigolf course. Video games are no more a narrative medium than minigolf; their basic contours are defined by the demands of play, not storytelling.
Why modern game designers are so bent on throwing a thin veil of story over the most innocuous and self-explanatory forms of play Tetris, Bejeweled, and what-have-you is an interesting question in itself. When I played Boom Blox, I never required an explanation of why I was hurling balls at block-towers, and still less one that involved saving a townfull of block-beavers. There is something willfully perverse about devoting man-hours towards concocting a narrative excuse for tossing virtual bowling-balls at towers. Throwing shit at towers is its own reward.
But on the other hand, I think that the whole argument does too little credit to our intrinsic human craving to turn every experience into a narrative. Case in point: When I was at Cedar Point this summer (Americas Roller Coast!) I rode a roller coaster with a story. Last summer, I actually played a mini golf course with a narrative. If you watch a lot of sports coverage (and the Olympics is a good case of this) it dawns on you that every aspect of competition is covered by subjecting it to a narrative logic: a runners struggle to overcome the obstacles of his troubled youth, the gymnasts last shot at redemption.
Narrative, like play, is one of the most basic tools we posses as human beings for coping with experience. And just as play can be fundamentally empowering, there is something distinctly empowering about using the tools of narrative to throw a net of meaning over our lives. It is by spinning out stories and engaging in play that we get our most distinctive sense of our selves as people, come to understand who we are, understand the natural and social world around us, and turn that world to our ends. Games always find themselves getting arbitrarily transformed into stories because the play and storytelling have a common function in human life.
I was reading Joseph Os excellent novel Netherland earlier this summer, and that book stuck with me when I was thinking about the function of narrative outside of literature. Netherland is about a lot of things immigrant experience, cricket, the aftermath of 9/11 in New York, friendship but it is most fundamentally about the protagonists need for a narrative capable of tying his shattered life and family back together. During the novel he meets Eliza, a woman who professionally arranges photo albums for clients, culling piles and piles of photos and pasting them into leather albums. The American moral philosopher David Velleman proposed a conception of moral reasoning that develops this idea in fastidious detail. On Vellemans view, moral reasoning is fundamentally about making sense of our actions past, present, and future. When we are deliberating about some act, our fundamental impulse is to think of how that act would cohere with the story we have been telling ourselves all along about rest of our behavior. Sometimes this narrative is just about the principles that underlie our action altruism, autonomy and sometimes this is more literally a story, a tale we tell ourselves about our lives. Eliza does this very thing when she constructs an album from photos of the narrators child:
“Shed done a good job. The story of my son, as she put it, was now gathered in a single leather-bound volume inscribed with his initials.

If photo-arranging serves as an embedded metaphor for literature, then what we need is some new guiding metaphor for making narratives within the medium of games. Elliott and Ashley dont mean to demean narrative as an activity. What they are really getting at is the fact that we dont know how to make a narrative out of play, instead of grafting a superfluous narrative onto the doing of fun things. We need some new way to make a story out of our desire to master the world by learning its rules. When we begin to figure out how to do this, we will be on the way to creating an art form.
