I was reading an idea from a purported sales expert. She recommends going into a sales appointment "naked." Her title even states: "Naked Sales Calls Pay Off." She writes about sales reps who she says are having extraordinary success since they started going into meetings without a brochure or any other collateral material.

"Armed with only notebooks and pens, they had nothing to hide behind. ... And because they were naked, with no brochures to fall back on, they had totally client-focused conversations." She concludes, "If you rely too heavily on your marketing collateral or samples, try shedding them for a while. Go naked into your sales calls, and try having a real discussion with your prospects instead of a pitch meeting. It won't be long before you start seeing a difference."

This idea is not only TOTALLY incorrect; it's borderline sales-criminal. This "naked" concept may have worked in 1908, but eh, not in 2008.

To go into a sales appointment "armed with only a notebook and a pen" is not only an insult to a potential customer, it's also a guaranteed loss of sale to a competitor who decides to prepare in advance.

Here's what you need to arm yourself with to be ready for the sale:
1. Print their website information that you can impact. The pages that frame your ideas for how your product or service are best used by the prospective customer.
2. Print their website information that has leadership information. Who the real decision makers are. And by the way, if the person you're meeting with is not among the leaders of the company, you may not be talking to the person who will make the final decision.
3. Print their website information that you don't understand. This will give you an opportunity to create meaningful dialog with the prospect. This will give you conversation ideas and questions that relate to the prospect.
4. Have three killer questions you are CERTAIN your competition is not asking. This will create buyer engagement and respect.
5. Have two ideas that the prospective customer will benefit from. If you bring an idea, it shows you've prepared, and it shows you have genuine interest in helping.
6. Bring your laptop computer with wireless Internet capability. This gives you the ability to access any information you need in seconds.
7. On your laptop should be all your information in PDF format. This will enable you to show it, print it, and/or email it on the spot. HINT: Only show your sales literature and information when a prospect asks to see it. This is an indicator of interest, and prevents product puking.
8. Have video testimonials to support EVERY claim you make on your laptop, and on a separate DVD. This will enable you to show and PROVE, not just show and tell. And it will enable you to leave a copy of your testimonials with your prospect.

Motherhood, or parenting for that matter, is an ever evolving thing. There really arent any books or advice or solid preparation that will totally prepare any woman for this challenge - Ive been a mom for almost five years and Im still grasping at straws.
Anyway, here are some of the things Ive learned over the years. Theyre not fool-proof but they help somewhat. :)
1. Keep Fit.
Mommyhood is a very demanding 24/7 thing. Bawal magkasakit! Like an olympian, you are expected to do everything faster, higher, stronger - at least where you kid/s is/are concerned. I know Im a bit remiss in this but, having a healthy body gives you the physical and mental stamina to make it through a challenging day.
2. Patience is a Virtue.
Theres no off switch where dependence, inquisitiveness, crankiness, and stubborness are concerned. If you know how to count up to one billion, learn to make it a trillion.
3. Have A Sense of Humor
I used to be pretty stuck up. Well, not anymore! Its easier to share a bond with your kid if you view his/her world through your childs eyes. Messy house? Permanent scribbles on walls? Cookie dough all over the kitchen floor? You can easily clean those up but you cant beat the fun that was etched in your childs memories forever. Besides, would you like your child to remember you for all eternity as the mommy na laging kunot ang noo?
4. Prioritize
The biggest prioritization that happened in my life was when I chose to become a SAHM. Once I decided that I would be one, I just rolled with it completely without any regrets. Now, everyday, I take my priorities one step further - by going into the details: play with Ninna today, do the laundry tomorrow. Blog today, give Ninna a bath tomorrow. That sort of thing, hehe. The sense of structure and organization affords sanity. Promise.
5. Practice Makes Perfect.
It helps when you do something over and over again, until it becomes second nature to you. Cooking Ninnas favorite adobo has become so second nature to me, for instance, that I dont stress about it as much as I did once before. Same with giving her a bath, clipping her toenails, teaching her how to clean up, or read, or dance. Routine rocks!
6. You are not Superwoman.
No matter how much you convince yourself, you can not do everything. You will make mistakes. You will not be able to catch your childs every dapa or prevent each and every bukol. You will get tired, and annoyed, and PMS-y. But you dont have to be so hard on yourself as long as you know that you did your very best. Communicate with your husband, your friends, your family. You wont be less of a mom if you should show your weaknesses - after all, were only human.

One of the most surprising things to me was the way the Hasidic Jews in Israel treated him at one point during his trip. But beyond that, Spurlock as an embedded journalist was incredible. When the military tells you to get your butt back in the convoy, its time to go, no questions asked. Pheffer, who raised roughly $110,000 during the last six months and $338,000 overall, said that since she returned to Queens after this years legislative session, her fundraising has picked up, but adjusting to the different city CFB rules that apply to the campaign has been challenging.

Frank Gulluscio, District Manager for Community Board 6, has declared his candidacy for the 32nd City Council District - a seat currently held by Councilmember Joseph Addabbo. Gulluscio reported raising roughly $28,000 during the last filing period, which was nearly seven times the amount he raised during the previous filing.

However, Nussbaum said she is still just exploring the possibility of running and does not have a date where she would make a decision one way or another.

Although 19 of the 45 Queens people who filed in July reported raising more than $20,000 during the last six months, five candidates who had filed previously with the CFB reported raising no additional money during the most recent period.

With more than a year before 2009 primaries, some candidates may decide not to run, while other candidates who have not signed up with the CFB are likely to do so before the next filing deadline in January.

I dont know if this year or this election cycle has distinguished itself, said Liu, who referenced the 2001 city elections, as a comparison for the last time this many open seats were up for grabs.

Watterson comes off a down year where they did not make the playoffs for the first time since 1998 . The Eagles also lost to their main rival, St. Francis DeSales for the first time in 10 games . Sophomore quarterback Cameron Newton hasnt been named second-string quarterback yet, but he could play a huge role in the offense this season.

With Meyer wanting to see Tebow throw more and carry less, he said theres a chance that Newton could see a lot of action this season as the single-wing back instead of Tebow at times.

ll tell you the one thing Camerons doing is running the football really well, Meyer said. I wouldnt be surprised to see him do that (in games). I think he gives us that element because I think hes a very functional runner and hes very tight with the ball right now.

The idea is to use Newton in running situations as opposed to Tebow to limit the number of hits Tebow takes during games.

Kicking battle

One of the forgotten battles at UFs camp is the battle for No. 1 place-kicker.

Freshman Caleb Sturgis came in the favorite, but senior Jonathan Phillips isnt making it easy.

We got a good battle, Meyer said. Jonathan Phillips is not giving that thing up. He got accepted to Miami Law School and we had a long discussion and he came back because he wanted a chance to kick at Florida. Hes not done a darn thing yet, but his whole approach to the game has been very impressive. accuracy has been an issue since arriving this spring, but he turned things up during UFs spring game when he knocked one through from 60 yards setting a spring-game record.

I made a comment that when his foot hits the ball it sounds different from most other kickers, Meyer said of Sturgis. He hits bombs, but hes also go to split the uprights with them. Theres a great battle going on over there.

Meyer excited about special teams

UF ranked seventh nationally and first in the Southeastern Conference in punt returns last season with an average of 15.08 yards per return with two touchdowns and Meyer hopes to increase those numbers.

To do so, Meyer is looking to find more weapons to put on the field.

re really going to work hard on that, Meyer said. The good thing is Brandon James is dynamic and theres a couple guys right behind him. Joe Haden, I watch him catch those punts and hes going to be a punt returner. We got Joe Haden, we got (Chris) Rainey, (Louis) Murphys back there catching punts. Weve got some guys. I remember my first year we had Vernell (Brown) and me. It wasnt a good deal.

Running backs to catch more

Running backs coach Kenny Carter said Thursday that hes hoping to get more production out of his running backs in the passing game by using more dump off passes if the rest of the field doesnt open up.

If its not down the field, then you get available underneath, Carter said. And if theyre putting their man-to-man against you and theyre trying to match you up then you create separation and you go and you get open. Were (an) offense thats based on matchups.

Meyer said the dump offs make up the part of UFs passing game. All that he asks is that his runners make some guys miss once they get the ball.

Our running backs are very productive right now, he said. Having a productive running back that can catch the ball and run a route (helps the offense). The reason you havent see them in there is because they werent productive and they didnt do their stuff the right way. Our guys are doing a good job with them.

Two tight ends still possible

Even with the loss of Cornelius Ingram (ACL) for the season UF will still look to fifth-year senior Tate Casey and sophomore Aaron Hernandez to be productive on the field together.

s still there, tight ends coach John Hevesy said of still using a two tight end set. The things you get with Tate being that second tight end compared to a CI, youre dealing with a little bit of a speed difference. In terms of blocking and everything else and assignments, everythings still there.

Meyer said junior receiver Percy Harvin didnt participate in contact drills, but did do some conditioning during practice. He is still unsure of his return. Freshmen defensive linemen Omar Hunter (back) and Matt Patchan (peck) were held out of team drills again, but did work out individually and Meyer said they are starting to look healthier. Redshirt senior offensive lineman Jim Tartt (shoulder) went through individual drills and Meyer expects him back healthy in a week. Redshirt senior offensive lineman Phil Trautwein (shoulder) was limited because Meyer and his staff are being extra cautious, but Meyer said his injury is minor.

1990's - 18 year-olds

This is perhaps the age group where the Broncos have made the biggest transition in regards to what they drafted in 2005 to what they have now. Of the 1990 bantam draft, only 1st rounder Geordie Wudrick is on the current roster.

The Broncos traded Ian Curtis (PG), Phil Gervais (Edm), Jordan Mistelbacher (Evt), Kris Foucault (Koot), and lost Clayton Cumiskey in the Edmonton Oil Kings Expansion draft.

Here's a rundown of what the Broncos return:

F- Geordie Wudrick - the 4th round pick of the L.A. Kings this summer will be looking to take the next step in his junior hockey career.

A gifted, big-bodied player who is looking for a break-out season. I don't think Geordie will ever be a top goal-scorer in the league but he will provide the team with a stable presence who can play in all situations. Geordie can score, but he may provide more of a support role for linemates Cody Eakin and Justin Dowling if the Broncos choose to keep that line together that was so productive in the playoffs. Regardless, he will be a major part of this year's team.

F - Justin Dowling - A former top scorer in the Alberta "AAA" midget league, we saw flashes of how talented he is at times last season. A head-turning playoffs should be the jump Dowling needs to get off to a strong start this season. He has a lot of offensive upside and a lot of people around the team are excited about his sophmore season in the WHL including me. His rookie season saw him collect 27 points. He should look to nearly double that output this season barring injury.


F - Jan Dalecky, - The 2nd year Broncos import from the Czech Republic is a player I'm really excited to see in an expanded role. Dalecky is a hard worker and good skater He works incredibly well along the boards and off the cycle. Pound for pound might be the strongest puck possession player on the team. You can see his talent. A year in the WHL under his belt should help the likable Dalecky have a productive season.


F - Mike Brown. The Calgary native is a favorite amongst his teammates. Brown is a thick, strong kid who did well in his 4th line role last season. Brown, who battled injuries will come into camp knowing what to expect. He will be pushed by some of the younger players this season but should be up for the challenge.

The Broncos do not have any 1990 d-men. I'm thinking it's probably on their wish list. If there is a trade in the works I would expect the Broncos would be getting one somewhere in the mix. If history tells us anything with G.M. Head Coach Dean Chynoweth, there's always a mini blockbuster the first week into the season.


1989's - 19 year-olds

Where the Broncos lack a 1990 d-men, they make up for it in their crop of 89's. So much so they felt Paul Postma was expendable in that big deal with Calgary to begin last season involving Kyle Bortis, Keegan Danereau and Erik Felde.

D - Eric Doyle - Look for Eric to be the man this season in his 4th year in the league. He will QB the powerplay and play key minutes, He's sure to add plenty of offense from the back-end. His 49 points last season was the offensive output the Broncos were looking for. Doyle will be one of the leaders on the team.


D - Ryan Molle - The New Jersey Devils 7th round pick will be a rock on the back-end this season. Look for a little more offense although he won't be relied on for that aspect. Primarily a shutdown d-man, look for Molle to see more time on the PP.


D - Derek Claffey - The Broncos defensive anchor. The Red Deer native excels in his own zone. He's going to be looked upon as a leader with this team once again. Bronco fans are looking forward to Claffey being the " Myles Rumsey type" but with more offensive prowess.


F - Grant Toulmin - Yes former 2nd round bantam pick Grant Toulmin will be back at Broncos training camp this season after a year in BCHL. He's excited to try and make an impact any way possible. Another good character player who wants to be more of a physical presence. We may see more of the rough and tumble side our fans were clamouring for out of Grant. Could add more offense than in years past. It will be interesting to see what a year of junior "A" did for him. He has a good attitude, and that's always a solid base to work with.


F- Matt Tassone - Last year's most improved player, now an NHL draft pick of the Dallas Stars (6th round). What a year for Matt Tassone who was fired up right out of last year's training camp. Look for more of the same from the native of Sherwood Park. Fans should be excited for the type of season Matt could have. He will score this season and be a big part of the offense. Look for a 25-30 goal season while providing some grit and toughness along the way.


G - Mark Guggenberger - A good pick-up from Portland at last year's trade deadline. Guggenberger had some astonishing numbers as a Bronco last season including a GAA of 2.59 and a save % of .917. His four shutouts in 14 appearances made a name for himself. It's just a matter of what mindset the goaltender will come in with this season.

With Travis Yonkman the favorite to see the bulk of the workload, do the Broncos have room for a 19 year-old back-up? Guggenberger has all the tools to be an elite goaltender in this league and turn pro. Can he make the most of it?

The Broncos have an elite group of 1988's. So much so that a lot of their tough decisions will be out of their hands with the prospects of several playing pro. The Broncos should have among the best group of 20's in the league this season.

F - Levi Nelson - Already signed with Boston, Levi will more than likely play pro in Providence of the AHL this year Nelson will be at Broncos training camp, but strictly on a conditioning basis. He may play in some pre-season games but I'm not sure he will. He told me he would love to but I don't know what good it would do either him or the Broncos. F - Dale Wiese - The New Rangers draft pick could be back this season due to a lack of room in the Rangers system. Nearing their 50 contract max, the Rangers may really like Dale but won't be able to do much about it. Dale has already taken on the mindset that he will spend another year of junior hockey. If he does play this year with the Broncos look for him to be a dominant power forward. The selfish part of me wants to see Dale in a Broncos jersey but if he signs and isn't back then that's great for him. Potential Broncos captain candidate.

F - Spencer McAvoy - One of my favorites since coming over in a trade with the Tigers in his 17 year-old season, Spencer will be hard up for a spot with such an elite age group. He knows it but will come to camp and compete hard anyways. The versatile F/D will be a 20 year-old in the league somewhere if not with the Broncos.


F - Keegan Dansereau - Maybe one of the most skilled players to come through the team in awhile, the Broncos will have a tough decision to make here.

The spending shortfalls in Social Security and Medicare are large. According to the Congressional Budget Office, Social Security and Medicare spending left unchecked would, after a generation, consume about 10 percentage points more of GDP than it does today.

Simple arithmetic suggests that with this much more of GDP eaten up by the two programs, all federal taxes on average would have to be raised by more than 50% to make up the shortfall. Research by economists Eric Engen of the Federal Reserve Board and Jonathan Skinner of Dartmouth suggests that such a tax increase would reduce long-term GDP growth by about a full percentage point. This is no small matter: Think of it as reversing all of the gains in our long-term growth rate from the productivity boom of the past 15 years.

There is another fiscal way. Balancing the federal budget without a tax increase is possible, but will require strong fiscal restraint. To achieve full-employment budget balance by the end of the next president’s term in office, federal nondefense spending growth needs to be restrained to 2% per year instead of the currently projected 4.5%. And modest defense spending increases to fund costs of needed improvements in national security are possible.

We can also secure a firm financial footing for Social Security (and Medicare) without choking off economic growth or curtailing our flexibility to pursue other spending priorities. Three actions are essential: (1) reduce entitlement spending growth through some form of means testing; (2) eliminate all nonessential spending in the rest of the budget; and (3) adopt policies that promote economic growth. This 180-degree difference from Mr. Obama’s fiscal plan forms the basis of Sen. McCain’s priorities for spending, taxes and health care.

The problem with Mr. Obama’s fiscal plans is not that that they lack vision. On the contrary, the vision is plain enough: a larger welfare state paid for by higher taxes. The problem is not even that they imply change. The problem is that his plans are statist.

While the candidate is sending a fiscal “Ich bin ein Berliner” message to Americans, European critics of his call for greater spending on defense are the canary in the coal mine for what lies ahead with his vision for the United States.
